Hi Non-Twisty Puzzles fans,

Nugget is a take-apart puzzle. The object is to remove the gold nugget from its cage. However, the nugget fits only through one of the holes and in only one orientation.

Nugget is based on a rhomic isocahedron, which has 120 isometric orientations. The frame has 6 holes. And out of those 720 combinations, there is only one where the nugget fits through the hole.

Watch the YouTube Video.
Buy the puzzle at my Shapeways Shop.

Enjoy!

Hey Oskar, this is a genius idea. How have you determined/designed it so that there aren't any other orientations that the nugget could fit through an outer hole? I can see how you would have designed one of the holes to perfectly match one of the nugget orientations but how have you fudged the shape of the nugget / shape of the other holes so that there isn't some unexpected combination that also works?

A cool little puzzle, and for 30 dollars its a steal in my opinion.

My guess is you work from the 120 orthographic projections of the 120 isometric orientations. The one with the smallest surface area should work well as the correct outer hole. To verify none of the others work I think you could just keep them at the same surface area but vary the shape such that the correct isometric orientation wouldn't fit through them. My concern would be that the SW&F material Shapeways uses is flexable. Will the cage deform enough to allow the incorrect orientations to pop out in some cases?

Carl

Good analysis Carl. As to the WSF material being flexible enough to allow forcing, amost anything is possible if you are frustrated enough - see here :(
