Ubuntu was good up until 10.10

Since then it's more like an Apple computer than anything. They're no longer appealing to the straight-up Linux audience, since it lacks the flexibility and customization of previous versions. Heron was a good build.

Also, what is this Gnome 3 crap? What are they feeding down my throat?

If you get the chance to switch, I'd recommend Kubuntu.

I'm going to move to Kubuntu, mostly for the KDE environment.

Hard core Gentoo zealot here. I'm still undecided as to whether Ubuntu is more harmful or helpful to the Linux community.

Simply, you have to have somewhere to start. I'm using Kubuntu right now.
(Dear Unity/Gnome3 ... I'm not going to change my desktop to a touchscreen)

Yes, it's a pet peeve of mine, but I would seriously remove "PC" from the poll and change it to "Windows". Computers that run Windows, Linux and OSX are ALL "Personal Computers". As much as those "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" advertisements would like you to think otherwise.

Started using Kubuntu around 5.10, kept it until I think 10.10(maybe 11.04). Switch to Debian Testing earlier this year, which is what I am currently using. For desktop environment, I am using LXDE.

You know what? I think I'm going to switch to Arch, actually. It's got the Linux feel to it.

Arch Linux lover, though I'd like to switch to Gentoo eventually.

I've been meaning to ask: how is E17 support on Gentoo? Arch's is decent, but I would imagine Gentoo is more up to date.

With Gentoo the answer is usually along the lines of these options:

1) It's in portage, just emerge it

2) It's in the portage ~ tree so just unmask it

3) It's in portage, use the 9999 build to stay up to date

4) It's not in portage or it isn't up-to-date so make your own ebuild

In this case, it is 3) use the 9999 build: enlightenment-0.16.9999.ebuild

In general Gentoo is mostly able to be bleeding-edge but there are certain packages that have big impacts on the rest of the system (gcc, glibc, xulrunner, gtk, etc) and because so many other packages link to them it is a bit harder to stay up-to-date on them. The latest release of Fedora Core is usually able to move faster on these packages because they only have to compile everything once. On Gentoo it has to compile on everyone's system with all of their customizations so more kinks have to be worked out on these packages.

But ultimately, the answer on Gentoo is that if you really want it, you can do the work to get it and Gentoo is flexible enough that you can still do so within the confines of the portage package manager.

I'm sure I *would* like Linux, Mac, etc., but I haven't tried them since I have to use PC at work, and I don't see the need to learn and use a different operating system.

It depends on your job. If I weren't using a Linux machine I wouldn't be able to do my job. Unfortunately, I also wouldn't be able to do my job if I weren't an expert on Windows malware :?

Mac all the way. My family had a PC for several years and...

IT SUCKED!!!

There's really no other phrase for it. It was crashing almost every day. Then we got a Mac in 2007.

IT DOESN'T SUCK!!!

The closest IT comes to crashing is a program malfunctioning and it needing to be turned off. The rest of the computer is not affected.

Yay Mac!! :D

And that Mac is still a personal computer, just one that happens to be made by Apple.
(like I said, pet peeve of mine. Sorry you got caught up in it)

LXDE? Try openbox or fluxbox. :D

+1 for Fluxbox. I've been using Fluxbox exclusively for about 7 years now and I'm unlikely to ever switch. In the past few years I've noticed a couple minor bugs that I've been thinking about digging into the code to fix but now that development is picking back up I'm hopeful that they will be squashed.

I use win 7. But I love unix based systems. In past I used ubuntu.
But since vers. 11.xx and "unity desktop" I hate it.
At moment I try to install FreeBDS.
Perhaps FreeBSD is a very good stable system.

Cheers,
Andrea

Linus is fun, but I prefer hanging out with Max.

I'm a PC and Windows 7 was my idea.

But Linux is pretty nice too. Not a perfect fit for me but I can see why others love it.

Mac just is not my way of thinking. It slows me down because it thinks it knows what I want more than me. I respect Mac users for loving it under one condition: the justification is NOT just the speed. This is a huge peeve of mine. If you like it because __ and __ and it lets you __, etc, that's great, you have your match. But the speed of a computer is largely determined by hardware, and for the price of a Mac computer, you could get one with Windows of that same speed or higher. I know the members of this forum are smarter about these kinds of decision, so this was more of a rant to just no one in particular.

Maybe a pet peeve, but I think you are fighting a losing battle. In practice, "PC" doesn't just mean "personal computer". Generally it implies Windows (or historically, MSDOS). Originally it was short for "IBM PC". A nice etymology coup on IBM & Microsoft's part, co-opting what should have been a general term. Yes, you will find a few people using "PC" more generically, but these people will get a lot of confused looks when they calls their Macs PCs.

You are correct in all points, sir. Doesn't stop me!

Coming back to this thread, still using Debian Linux, but now I'm using dwm. Do I dig up a screenshot thread or do I start a new one?

And I even have an ncurses music player, with visualizations:

With a kickin progress bar!:

Going to start a new "Post your desktop thread" anyway, it's been a while and I like seeing everyone's set up. :D
