Beautiful analogy. But I think trying to make a snowball one snowflake at a time using only your hot hands would be far easier than solving this beast.

For all of you who asked... it has 1527 pieces (i think). That number may be off by a few, but that's what I recall it being when I calculated it about a year ago. And it has 10 less pieces than Oskar's 17x17x17. You're welcome Oskar. I was sure that to make it so your record would still exist.

I bet people wouldn't even react amazed because no matter how long the train is going there is not going to be much of a progress visible for anyone who has no idea what exactly you are doing. Maybe intercontinental flights and a lot of coffe for you and your observers.

Ah, it seems impatience got the better of you. It would have been nice for the puzzle to be shown when completed, but oh well, what's done is done.

This does look very impressive. How well does it turn? With all those small parts, and presumably a V-MECH, it would seem like those parts could catch rather easily, however I could be completely wrong. How do you plan to keep the stickers on? Glue? Ironing? Polishing with a dremel?

Yeah, its impressive. But when can we expect the crazy version?

I was just thinking: would it not be better to paint each side rather than try to sticker it? Maybe spray paint would work best, or maybe dip-dyeing - I have no idea if anyone has ever tried this with a puzzle, but I imagine that any stickers would peel off very easily and look quite bad after handling for a while. Plus it would take forever to cut them properly and stick them all on with perfect alignment...

I think it is virtually impossible to paint something like this. There is no way that you can get tidy edges to the paint. Super gluing the stickers in a similar fashion to the way I do my micro puzzles would work fine. It would however take a flipping long time as stated.

Okay, I'm not sure if this is real or fake. I noticed that, in the first picture, the first set of layers are a little off, but everything else is aligned almost perfectly.

Why? When a British mountaineer was asked "Why do you climb mountains", he answered "Because they are there". Why have you built this extreme puzzle? Because you can, because it is possible.

Sorry I left everyone with suspense on details. First off, this is printed. I won't tell you how much it costed me. I don't really know how people came up with the idea that it was casted. Well I was fooling around on solidworks a while back, and designed an examinx just for giggles. I honestly never thought I would print it. After the parts came in, I was way over my mind that I got myself into a puzzle so big. This thing was a pain is the rat's butt through a flying donut. Assembling took forever, and I'm still lost on this stickering thing. The pieces are very small. Like if you saw this, you would need like a microscope to see the layers. Surprisingly though, It works to an extent. It's pretty difficult to turn. I put a lot of stability supports in the mechanism, but that just added more friction. The thing is more of a beauty to look at rather than to turn. So this brings me to my last point. Why? Why is a puzzle like this something worth building? Now riddle me this Batman; why is anything worth doing? Well my father once told me "you only live once". Why would you live a life full of nothing. Nobody wants to die with a boring list of accomplishments. When most people die their life was like,'went to collage, got a job, started a family, died'. It's not that these things are bad. But life isn't always about living, it's about making the best of it. So yea that's my motivation to builders.I really need stickering ideas. I really don't want to ruin the thing but trying to do something stupid to it.

Matt, seeing as how all the pieces are so small, I really suggest you iron the pieces!! Otherwise you'll have little stickers jumping around all the time !!

Matt, I don't know why you decided to post about this now, I really don't, but nevertheless it is an amazing feat. I love how you worded your reasoning for building it.

Please don't try painting it or using pens etc. YOU WILL ruin it. The easiest option would be to dye all the central pieces (non edge or corners) like Oskar did with his 17x17x17. That wouldn't satisfy me though but the only alternative I can see is getting a friendly sticker maker to knock a set up for you. Then it's several weeks with drops of super glue on the end of a needle and moving stickers round with a pair of tweezers.
