Did anyone else feel the quake?

EDIT: I should add that living in California all my life, I have NEVER seen a big quake that didn't have a whole bunch of small quakes leading up to it. The map for this quake has no activity in the last 7 days other than this quake. I'm not a seismologist but that sure makes me think this is a precursor quake to a larger one. By California standards, 5.9 isn't all that big. Certainly leaves room for a much bigger one in the ~7 range.

I'm about 40 miles away from the epicenter, so yeah I definitely felt it. Pretty wild, this is only the second I've ever felt here in VA.

Several of my friends here in Ohio said they felt it. I missed it somehow =/

I couldn't feel it here; I guess I'm just too far away.

Colorado also had one last night and I didn't even feel it

somehow, every single member of our ~170 strong marching band completely failed to notice this quake that occurred during our practice... (NJ)
I only found out hours later, after reading it on the news...

I only learned about this earthquake deal overhearing someone else's conversation...

I had felt that my house decided to take a walk somewhere, for good 20-30 seconds or something like that. Never experienced an earthquake before, and can't say I liked it.

I was waiting for an after shock....so about and hour later Fedex decided to drive down my block...

My fiance works in Chicago on the tenth floor of a building. She though it was super windy out because the building was swaying a bit. I guess that was actually part of the earthquake.

I was at my old high school visiting one of my teachers on the second floor. At first, I thought they turned the air-conditioner on. Then when the books started falling off the shelves and desks started to fall over, it was safe to say it was an earthquake. I was 34 miles from the epicenter. It put some serious cracks in the foundation of my house just around the corner from the school.

For the record, there was another earthquake a year ago in VA that measured approx. 3.3. Fairly close together. A sign maybe?

Also for the record, it should be known that this is not DC's quake. This happened in central Virginia, not in the District of Columbia.

Lots of small and regular 'mini-quakes' are generally a *good* sign that there *isn't* a really big one building up in a susceptible area as the plate-tectonic tension is being released gradually - it's when things go abnormally quiet for a long time that you start to worry as the tension accumulates over time...

Anyway, I hope nobody was hurt.

There was a earthquake 3.0 here last night, it was not bad though. Just a 3.0.

I'm also not a seismologist but I am actually studying some seismology at uni. I would believe that having a whole bunch of small shakes leading up to a larger earthquake would be quite common due to the fact that the San Andreas Fault is caused by two plates sliding past each other. Meaning that when seismic activity occurs, it rarely occurs only in the form of one giant earthquake. As opposed to the quake seen in the Indian Ocean in 2004, which was caused by a plate subducting below another. This will stretch the plates till they can't resist it anymore, and will bouncy back out causing one massive earthquake. I'm surprised you could even feel that! It is not uncommon for earthquakes with magnitues smaller than 4 to go by unnoticed because they're so weak. For an earthquake to start doing damage on buildings etc, it usually needs to go about or around a 5 or a6.

The way I have learned and understand is there are little slips of the plates next to each other than eventually they have a big slip all at once.
