Hello Puzzlers,

I'm pleased to introduce my next puzzle, the Compound Fracture. As you can guess from the name, Compound Fracture is a relative of the Fracture-10 puzzle, but this time with an extra twist. I made a slight change to the geometry to allow 45 degree turns, which subsequently allows edge and center pieces to exchange positions.

Can anyone guess what change to the geometry was made to allow the 45 degree turns?

Wow that's cool, I don't know, but I would see this puzzle mass produce .

My guess: You changed the solid from a pentagonal dipyramid to a square dipyramid. I guess this because you do not show a photo directed on the tips of the pyramid.

that's impossible, otherwise opposite cuts would be parallel.
my guess is that it's either been made hexagonal, or the proportions of the dipyramid have been changed to allow this. (then again, neither seems too plausible...)

The only way to do this would be increasing the number of axes. I'll guess it's now 7 instead of 5 because Monopoly said 6 already. Or it's still 5 but two of them can't rotate and it's an irregular hexagon.

My bet is a hexagonal dipyramid. That puzzle looks awesome! Will you be offering it on Shapeways?

It certainly didn't take long for you to home in on the answer! Hopefully the video and the photo below explain everything clearly enough.
I was thinking of calling this puzzle "Starburst" because of the fact that in the vertex view it appears as if the star shape is bursting open on one tip.

Grr... Irregular geometry...

I believe that the name 'Starburst' is already taken on a shape mod of the Dino Dodecahedron by Danny (I can't remember his username).

Are stickers 1 and 2 on two seperate parts?



It appears to me these wouldn't be separable. If that is the case may I ask why you used two stickers here?

Stickers 1 and 2 are actually both on the core of the puzzle, along with their mirrors on the other side and other vertex, as well as the black stickers in the central crease. I used two stickers for a few reasons. First, I wanted to make creating the sticker pattern as easy as possible by minimizing variants. Second, I wanted to be able to place the colors after receiving the stickers, and not be locked into having certain colors at the "ends". Last, I think it looks better to retain the aesthetics of the sticker pattern on the "incomplete" sides.

I could solve that Well, if you allow me to use a large number of simians and a huge length of time.

I haven't scrambled the puzzle fully since I put the stickers on. Prior to stickering, it was a good challenge just to get it back to it's proper shape. Given that, and how difficult Fracture-10 was to solve (talk about a beast!), I'm not going to scramble Compound Fracture until I have a good amount of time to dedicate to solving. Of course, if anyone else wants to give it a try, the puzzle is available in my shop
