I did, but I've given up posting world records like this now. I can imagine they'll be an official sub 5 solve by the end of the year.

i don't think so, this solve is "officially" non lucky but in fact he had an extremly easy X-cross(three edges already done) and a free F2L-pair. This is the kind of record the 7.08 was I think (but I'm not definately sure).

I'm no speed solver, but how can they be allowed to have such a start? Aren't there any rules for scrambling?

Everyone gets the same scramble. It's just that Feliks knows how to use everything to its optimum advantage.

Hi Luke, The X cross that EMI94100 is talking about is the first cross? and a free F2L pair is one pair ready to place at the start? Even if everyone at that comp gets this scramble, not every competition gets this scramble, is what I mean. Am I misunderstanding? Burgo.

You are correct that not every competition on the planet gets this, but it's only elite cubers who can use this to a decent advantage. Besides, if all the scrambles were the same all across the world, they'd have to remain the same scrambles in every competition, meaning that someone can just keep on practising the scramble and get a really quick solve.

You can call it lucky if you want, but it was the second time he broke the world record that day. And one of 3 sub 7 second solves in that competition alone.
He has done 9/10 of the worlds best offial solves ever.

It's the zhanchi, first prototype version.

Great, you are right. The one Felix using is the prototype of Dayan Zhanchi. We are all surprise that this one help him a lot to break the WR.

This is a perfect ad for Zhanchi: it breaks the WR before release!

The old 7.08 seconds record was a very lucky solve. The last layer practically solved itself. He just did a U2 rotation and the cube was finished Geeze! These world record attempts are getting insane! Ever since the original reverse corner-cutting Guhong came out, these world records have been dropping like flies. I'm not a speed solver by nature, but I don't really like my Guhong all that much because sometimes if I don't hold it just right, it'll suddenly make a wrong move that I didn't intend to do. If that happens mid-algorithm, it's back to square one again. Besides, I got the multicolor version which is not competition legal. My favorite cube currently is the ball-core Mf8 Legend. It turns very smoothly and is practically unpoppable.

Great stuff. I am still fascinated to see how far it can go. People are always saying it won't ever go beneath x seconds but then it does. Warning: Long sentence- Based on the total number of solves completed by the top solvers in all the competitions each year and the probability of certain moves not being needed during a particular solve has anyone worked out a probability chart of expected future times? The chart would show for example the likelihood of the world record breaking 4 seconds in the next two years. Can we expect to see a solved cube after the cross plus 3 pairs? and what sort of time would this give? etc etc. I know there are loads of other factors to consider but I'd love to see the figures based purely on my long sentence.

Looking at square1, for example, the current average record is less than half of what it was four years ago, using the exact same methods and hardware. As some people improve, others are inspired to improve further.
