Hi Twisty Puzzles fans,

Mixup 5x5x5 is a twisty puzzle where many more pieces can swap place than one would expect. The puzzle has 262 pieces, of which 66 inter-swappable "squares" and 72 inter-swappable "spacers" between them. Each "square" can be in any of its four orientations. The name of this puzzle is ambiguous, as there are 9 pieces in a row at the edges. Still, the base puzzle is a 5x5x5. For the specialists: this puzzle jumbles and it is fudged.

The video shows how smoothly the puzzle turns. This came as a surprise to me too, as several people had predicted that this puzzle would not turn at all.

Watch the YouTube video.
Buy the puzzle at my Shapeways Shop.

Check out the photos below.

Enjoy!

Madness, sheer madness! Insanely beautiful, though. Anyone who can work out how many combinations this puzzle has deserves a Nobel Prize.

After I read the title I was expecting something looking like 5x5x5, but with additional moves possible, analogous to 3x3x3 Mixup Cube (which already would be nice), but this... just amazing. Looks beautiful.

I count 7. Though I see 9 in a row across the center of a face. Are there 2 hidden pieces at the edge?

WOW!!! That is impressive and your small "spacers" give me some hope that the I'll get my Thorny Cube with its small circle pieces working yet.

As for this puzzle jumbling... I'll have to think about that. So far jumbling is a term that has been applied to "pure" twisty puzzles. By that I mean puzzles which don't require fudging and don't have slidey pieces like the Mixup 3x3x3. As such I'm not sure if this should be called jumbling... or something else. You can shape mode a Mixup 3x3x3 into a doctrinaire puzzle... can the same be done for this Mixup 5x5x5? If so what does it look like?

Carl

Wonderful Oskar!

I have to admit, I was one of the people who thought that this puzzle would not function well, if at all. Two of Oskar's old puzzles "raised my alarm". The video for the mixup 3x3x4 showed that that higher order mixup cubes may be unstable. Then, while attending the NYPPS, I was able to play with the mixup 2x2x4, and even though I was being quite gentle with it, it popped! While still at the NYPPS, I voiced my concerns to Oskar but, he informed me that the parts had already been ordered!

Clearly I was wrong, and the mixup 5x5x5 turned out to be a fantastic puzzle!

I saw this on your Shapeways a while back, and it looked amazing. I was wondering when it was going to be prototyped!

Well done!

Oskar, could you post some sort of illustration to help explain exactly what each kind of piece on the cube is and does?

Amazing!
I am still working on your Mixup 3x3x3 !

Hope, we meet at the DCD 2011 or are you planning to come to the GDC 2011, too? I'd like to try out this amazing creation.

I can't believe how well this turns! I wish it weren't so expensive. If the price were more like $200, I'd buy one in a heartbeat! (Is it possible?)

Simply amazing, your puzzles just keep getting better!

If only they could all be mass produced cheaply......

I guess that a completely scrambled picture would be too much to ask for? :P

awesome puzzle! can you turn the 2nd and the 4th layer, then do the mixup moves?

its a pity it is so expensive............ seems like most shapeways puzzles are expensive, apart from shim's and some of pirsquared's

This is such a beautiful puzzle and seeing your original mix-up cube spawn so many puzzles and finally this is simply amazing. :D

On shapeways where it says:

The complete Mixup 5x5x5 requires
-1x set 1
-3x set 2

The links at set1 and set2 both take me here. Are they working for anyone else?

Strange. Even when I am logged out from Shapeways, the links take me to Set 1 and Set 2.

You are quite welcome to 1) visit me, 2) scramble my puzzle, 3) take a photo and 4) solve it. If 4) doesn't work, then you can always 5) buy it. :-)
pirsquared wrote:

The price is explained by the large surface area (multiplied by a 0.7 mm wall thickness) of the puzzle, as there are so many pieces sliding over and under each other.
Jared wrote:

The drawing below shows all the different pieces in this puzzle. As you can see, there are four different "square" pieces, and three different "spacers" that can all be interchanged.

(By the way, what type of 5x5x5 core is this?)

If you ship one to me, I'll assemble it, find a solution, and post a tutorial!

Unfortunately you didn't take me up on that offer for the 17x17 ( ) but hopefully........
