The stones I used are flat on top as well. The only real difference is the quality. If you can compare the two, they look exactly the same in size and shape, but the swarovski are just perfect in comparison. They also aren't made from acrylic.
That's not to say that it was inexpensive to make mine:
$10.58 - 3x3 cube
$23.81 - 864 stones @ ($3.17 per 115)
Total: $34.39
That doesn't include the extra 3 packs of stones I needed to buy to get the right ratio of colored stones correct (they were mulitcolor packs). I can't imagine the cost if I'd used swarovski crystals.
Darren, I'd love to see pics of yours. I'm not sure I ever got to see what your cube looked like in the first place, as the auction description expired before I had a chance to see it.
