Have you considered trying a DIY from http://www.rubiks.com? They have screws and arched centers. You can get it without stickers for $8.99, and then just get stickers from http://www.cubesmith.com

no, i didn't even know such a thing was available, I only recently discovered that there were different cubes then those sold in stores. The DIY sounds like it would be just as good as a studio and is a lot easier to get. Can anyone clue me in ?

Hi Chris,

My current best speedcube is a DIY center with studio cubies (they have softer plastic and they are easier to wear out). This combo I think is real nice since that the cubies are smaller after they are worn out and are smoother and with the DIY adjustable ARCHED centers, they do NOT get caught, which is like perfect. However, I personally think that the DIY cubes from Rubiks.com are AWESOME! You can loosen it to your liking and it won't pop (because of the archs) and you can choose between screws or rivets. It is pretty close to what I would think a good cube. And as for the sticker problems, I would order it from Chris (Jello33...another twistypuzzle member here), his site is: http://www.cubesmith.org . His stickers are really nice and alot better than the rubiks.com replacement sheet. Hope that helps~

Studio cubes are great if you can deal with the pops. Although I do have a DIY, the speedcube I use now is a regular Hasbro 25th anniversary cube from Target. It's very smooth turning and never pops. Cubesmith stickers are a must have.

I've noticed if I play with my cube in the direct sunlight outside on a sunny day for 30-60 minutes it helps make my cube turn smoother and it's a lasting effect. Try to manhandle it through slight misalignments once it warms up. Eventually you'll feel it change all of a sudden. Don't forget the silicone of course.

I'm getting mostly low 30's lately but it's not my cube that's keeping me from going faster, I only use 6 algorithims. Maybe I should put some effort into learning more.

Good luck in your quest for sub 20, but that is a mighty lofty goal.

Great, thanks everyone, I am glad I found such a helpfull forum, and extremely active for this time of night :o The DIY self cube is going to be great, can't wait to make my first true speedcube. Is Rubik's the only place to get a kit from ? there shipping is pretty steep. If not i guess i will suck it up and pay almost as much in shipping as i am for the cube. I hope to become more knowledgable and pay back into the community.
Thanks again .
Chris

What I do is that I get like other people to order with me, and split the s/h fee, and usually, they pay enough to pay off for your s/h all together. And also, as for the DIY cube question, the only place that I trust is rubiks.com, the meffert's assembly cubes are NOT built for speedcubing~

You can get studio cubes off ebay or pay the stiff shipping charge. I wanting to try a DIY cube but they were sold out for the longest time.
