Hello Twisty Puzzlers, I am proud to present my newest puzzle creation, the DeFTI. (Short for " Deeper Face-Turning Icosahedron") VIDEO!AUCTION!Attachment:
File comment: DeFTI
SANY0835.JPG [ 2.06 MiB | Viewed 5615 times ]
The DeFTI is a slightly deeper-cut FTI. All of the FT Icosahedra so far have had cuts that go through the center of the adjacent faces. The cuts on the DeFTI go through the midpoints of the adjacent edges. It's kind of hard to describe, but it's pretty clear in the pictures. Just like the other FT Icosahedra, the DeFTI jumbles. I am not entirely sure what the angle is, but it's probably the same as the other FT Icosahedra. I designed this puzzle on SolidWorks, printed it in WSF from Shapeways, dyed it with RIT dye, and stickered it with cubesmith vinyl material cut with my university's laser-cutter. There are 10 colors, with opposite sides stickered the same color. I'd like to give a big thank you to Eric (gingervergo) for his help getting the tolerances right. I will be uploading a video as soon as I make it. The DeFTI will go up on eBay sometime later this week. Attachment:

Will you be offering these for sale on Shapeways, or no, because if so, I might just have to save up money to buy one.

I love this! I was always a fan of FTI's and this one looks great (plus it jumbles )

Incredible! Yes, can you show a size comparison? ...And I think that would be pretty tough to solve!

Oops! Forgot to do a size comparison! Here it is next to a V7. It's much smaller than you would think. Attachment:

The turning is wonderful! It only rarely locks up, and when it does, it's really easy to get past it. Sharon Avidor wrote: what is the edge length of it? The edges are ~42mm long. Opposite sides are ~65mm apart. It's actually so small that I wasn't able to fit my logo onto the largest sticker! Also, remember how my FTRD's corners were able to turn in place? I was a little worried that the DeFTI's corners would turn in place as well, but they don't! I'm still not sure what to do to fix that on the FTRD, but I'm happy that it didn't happen here! -pi (Eitan)

That looks cool; when it's solved it looks like you've drawn all over it in marker pen. Alex

Thanks everyone! APJ wrote: ...it looks like you've drawn all over it in marker pen. "Marker pen"? I love British people. We Americans would call it either a marker or a pen. The world is a wonderful place. -π (Eitan)

oh god, this thing gets nuts! Keeping track of the cutting planes is difficult enough, but solving it, yikes!

There is something about these rectangular areas that just screams "shape mod" to me...any suggestions? Making them faces perhaps (would that even be possible, with the corner areas being connecting faces)? What about making this a cube? That would be one scary cube, just like this is a slightly frightening icosahedron...

Very cool! Congratulations.
So now we have 2.1.1 (twice), 2.1.2, and 2.1.3 built. Also Drew's Chopasaurus (1.2.9) is, I think, equivalent to 2.1.5. This is truly the year of icosahedral twist. And they all jumble!

Don't forget Drew's Starminx III (1.2.6). I want to say it's somewhere between 2.1.4 and 2.1.5, but I can't tell for sure. There my never be a real equivalence because the shapes are too different. @pirsquared, I can't think of anything that hasn't been said already. Very cool puzzle. I eagerly await a video.

Wow! I watched the video this morning, and I can't believe how well it turns! In my opinion this is the best puzzle design you've made. Incredible!

It's actually a picture of the half that I wasn't able to solve. Everything on the side of the puzzle away from the picture was fully solved. About an hour after taking this picture, I gave up and took it apart. -π (Eitan)
