Hey guys, I like optical illusions and paradoxes, and I though of making maybe one of two paradoxical objects in 3D (or at least an illusion of the objects) I've uploaded the Penrose Staircase on shapeways. I'm not sure I'll be prototyping it, knowing that I bought three of my puzzles yesterday and today, so I'm short in cash, but I don't think it really needs prototyping of course. You can see the 3D simulation in this link. Here is the result, when you watch it from a certain point of view (picture) Enjoy! - Greg

Very cool! The only possible problem I see is that most 3d design programs don't take parallax into account while in "design mode" this means that two parallel line will never touch, when in reality they appear to merge into a vanising point. Because this object relies on a certain viewing angle to create the illusion, I would check to make sure everything is perfect before you go out and order one. If this works out well, I may order one, because its pretty cool! Now go make some Other impossible objects like the impossible triangle and Escher's house!

You should look into the guy who figured out how to actually make some of these (especially the penrose triangle) a much different way. I can't remember the video or link, but google something about "impossible geometries solved" or something like that.
They wrote a program that takes drawings and turns them into 3d models (pretty neat, right?) and then fed it impossible geometries to test it, and were surprised when it came up with solutions for some of them.
I'll look for it now.

No, it's made by NOT using 90 degree angles.

Here is a link to a video describing his work on creating "impossible" 3D solids: http://gcoe.mims.meiji.ac.jp/jpn/movie/impossible/index.htmlThanks, I thought I was going crazy for a minute.

I like your way to make water flow constantly although If I model it it won't be considered an impossible oject (or did I miss something?) I think I might upload more Penrose triangles (but this time full triangles) - Greg

Oh man, I really want to know how a deck of cards with the cellophane still on went into a jar... or how a 1 piece arrow can go through a nut, if I could figure that out, I could probably do anything.

For a little while, I was involved in the making of several impossible bottles. They included tennis balls, packs of crayons and cards, pieces of wood/card decks with screws planted firmly in them, pairs of scissors, and knots. I tried a Rubik's Cube but found it a bit tricky to do in a wine bottle. Photos of some of my examples can be found here.
