At first sight all four pieces look identical, but on closer inspection one of the silver pieces has a ramped slot instead of a fully empty slot. This allows one pin to retract when the puzzle is expanded. However, this doesn't seem to me to allow the puzzle to be taken apart in any principled way -- it always takes lots of jiggling.

I've about convinced myself that mine is defective, and that BOTH silver pieces should have the ramped slot. That would make a lot more sense to me, and allow the puzzle to work.

Anyone else who has one, is that correct???

Bob, I could answer this, as long as I find some time to go through some of my boxes.
I used to have all puzzles spread around, but lately, with so many little kids roaming
around the house (nephews, niece, etc) I already had some "casualties if war".

I also did not have time to try out this puzzle (since last year!), so maybe now this
time has arrived, given this chance as a motivation

:)

Each silver piece from SQUARE puzzle has ramped slot. But my disassembling trick isn't sensitive to those ramps, I guess.
