I hope there not fake or cheapys. I hope there the real deal. What do you guys/gals think about the cube?

I think it looks nice but it is way too pricy. As sparkly as it will be you could joke with somebody about "always having to buy batteries for it".

I say it looks tight. Maybe you can use such an expensive cube for speedcubing ~

First off i'm not speedcubing material(:oops:) but I can do it. Secondly I would probability have it as a home decor piece. Then I would need a glass case and a stand to show all of the Gems on the rubiks cube.

BTW! If anybody knows gems please tell me the how rare or pricey they are? Ok!

Don't mean to dampen your spirits but I believe that Rhinestones are cut and "painted" glass...

I liked that cube too but it was a bit to pricey for me. I did some research on Swarowski crystals and I think they are the 2012 model, size ss16. That model is availible online in several shops but usually in small quantities for high prices. The only one I found selling bigger amounts is http://www.rhinestonz.co.nz where a gross of stones would cost nz10.80, (us$7.40 I think).

With six sides on a cube that is nz$65 (us$44.5). The price is not to high, but it would take lots of time to glue all those stones to the cube. Also I'm not sure how easy it is to do a decent job of it, but mabye I'll try.

I paid $15 for theSwarowski necklace I bought a few months ago. It has 44 stones of three different colors. The one you bought looks like it has 864 stones, about 20 times more. Lets say the cheap gold of the necklace acounts for $9 of its total value, and the 44 stones would make of $6. $6 for 44 stones means about $120 for the 864 stones of yours. The cost of the cube must be about $9, making the total to $125.

This is completly and Estimation, but it agrees with the price you paid.

Nice item, I was looking at this one, I believe this person had one the week before that went for $60. Just for workmanship its worth that price. The stones (swarovski) themselves would cost anywhere from $40 to $70 depending on size, color, and source. Check eBay for prices on Swarovski, they can vary. I can appreciate the workmanship since I tried a while ago to do the same with a masterball (whatelse lol). Its currently on the back burner since the glue I used was the wrong glue and I didn't buy enough stones. I started by completely covering the puzzle but it takes a lot of work and time. Very easy to screw up. Then I tried to outline the tiles and its seems to work nicely. Check out the pic. (disregard the second pic, its the same one).

You may want to find out what glue was used on your cube, I found that they will fall off with some handling.

I had no idea the stones were that expensive! And all the work must have been a pain, I don't even like cutting stickers for my puzzles I make.

I love the look of it though! Very pretty indeed. And the stand is awesome.

Very nice pickup, Dodd. I thought about bidding on it but realized several collectors more hardcore than myself were already on it. I'll just have to be happy with the unpackaged one I've been holding onto.

One of these days you should take a group photo of your entire collection, although it would probably take hours to set up and tear back down!

Dodd, yes this would be something of value to me. I would pay quite some money. But after all that would have been a private deal between two parties.

The auction ended, but there was no winner. I was shocked to see the auction that I was watching had ended early. After 3 days, only 18 hits had registered on the counter, and I was 2 of them. I quickly emailed the seller to find out the scoop. I won't disclose the personal details, but the seller offered to sell them to me for $..... I about fell over and quickly replied, SOLD!!!! If you would like another heart attack Aleksey, I will disclose the dollar amount. This is my best find of this year.





As far as a group photo, I do have a website of my collection of which I will update in January. I do need to reorganize my collection as it is scattered all over and in many boxes. Maybe when I have an extra day or two in the next 5 years , I will throw everything on the floor and shoot a big picture. I should have done that at the time I did all my group photos for my web collection. That in itself took several days.

Lots of things to reply to here:

Darren: I hate to say it, but it looks to me like those "gems" might be 4x4 "sheets" stuck on all together. If they were done one at a time by hand, the precision is rather incredible. Frankly, I'd be surprised if they weren't plastic. Please let us know when it arrives! I wonder if/when the seller will post the other one shown in the picture?

Dodd: Save us the time of digging through eBay! Do you have the auction links for the Missing Link and the Flowered Jewel? Incredible finds. I dunno what the Jewel is worth, but it should be a lot. I'd hate to guess.

Aleksey: Some amazing deals there. Well done. Makes me wonder how in the world I ever found the time to scour eBay for gems like those! It's been over a year now since I fell out of my 1-2 hours per day routine. I was truly addicted before, which was certainly a bad thing, but not going there at all seems kinda bad too! I keep getting the "missed the boat" feeling!

I received the cube today!!! Do you know how you can tell if there plastic or not plastic without taking them off the cube? I get nervous just thinking about taking them off the cube. Do not take them off the cube, whatever you do. It's not worth it. Even if they are plastic, this is still a very attractive cube that would look great under a bright light. You don't want to harm your investment, regardless.

Here are a few ideas of how to check if they are plastic. Perhaps other members will have some better ones...

#1: Check for misalignments. If it's done by hand, there will be some. Not all gems will be perfectly aligned to their neighbours. Working by hand, it would be next to impossible to make even a single 4x4 group accurate enough not to be visible to a casual inspection, let alone 54 of them. Perfect alignments wouldn't neccessarily mean they were plastic, it could also mean a simple tool (or even a complex machine) was used to stick on all 16 gems in one shot. It wouldn't be hard to build such a simple tool, and would certainly be a way of saving hours of tedious work.

#2: Check for "flash" on the outer edges of each 4x4 group which would indicate they were cut from a larger sheet.

Yeah, that's the way to go, of course. It sure would be nice to pick up rare puzzles for peanuts from time to time, but it's a mixed blessing. I would have been very temptated by things like Dodd's Missing Link! I'm not going to get back onto eBay at least until I get my mortgage downpayment nailed down!

I have never seen a boxed Deluxe Missing link, let alone a sealed one.

Here is another item that I have never seen boxed either. It isn't as valuable as the link. I was surprised when I received it today that it is sealed in original shrink wrap also. There are currently 2 of these without the box on ebay now that I know of, both of which are selling more than what I won this for.

As a side note, the price tag was on the deluxe missing link. The price tag said Sears $6.99. When was the last time someone saw a Rubik's product at a Sears store? I wonder how many department stores and drug stores back in the 80's sold Rubik's items? Today you don't see many except the Cube in stores. Thank you Meffert, Rubiks.com, and EBAY!!!!!!!

I am not "mashick", "mashick" is not me! (in Soviet Russia in 1920-es when lots of people did not know how to read or write, they were teaching people to read and write, and did that with phrases like: "We are not slaves, slaves are not us!".)

It's a coincidence. I think we just employ similar methods in finding the right auctions. I suspect the difference is that most of the time I bid manually without any sniper bid software. There is another person who is often there as well, that's "puzzlemaniac".

I too was watching with disbelief. When I first saw the auction listed, a number of thoughts came. Where was this puzzle in my list of highly desired? (Way up). How often are these listed on eBay? (Almost never--and I've not ever seen an unopened one listed in 2 years. I don't troll eBay daily, or even weekly, though).

Was I going to be able to have access to my computer during a rather hectic holiday season? Could I enter a bid at the closing time of 1:29 AM? (Turns out I did--set an alarm). And, having decided to bid early because of uncertainties, what would my "gag reflex" bid be? (That's the $$bid which, if reached, would induce vomiting). So, I went ahead with it--and won it. (Didn't puke, merely a wave of nausea).

So, in the cosmic scheme of things, would I be happier now, next month, or in a year, having not overspent and just let it go? Or grab it, enjoy it, and not look for another all over again. Heck, I've spent that much on an overpriced big city hotel room for one night.

I've learned a lot lurking, and linking, from these threads. Appreciate the opportunity to post.
