Not the prettiest in the world. Not the most difficult to solve. But hey, at least it doesn't change shape :)

Seriously though, I'm not a fan of "gappy" puzzles. I wanted to do something different from the usual Rainbow Cube mods and this was all I could think of at the time.

The large gaps are necessary because the pieces pass under each other slightly during turns.

It's basically a plated Dino Trunc. Don't worry, I'm aware that the Dino Trunc is in the grey zone on Tony's copy list and I only made this mod for my own collection.

I don't even know if anyone's made one of these before - nothing turned up in my searches. I call it a Rainbow Rhomb.

It's a nice design and a lot more interesting than the Dino Cube mod often done.

I planned to make one of these, but the problem is that it has to be very precise to not block movement, plus the sheet alone makes it feel not very strong.

Great Puzzle!

Yes, precision was a big problem for this small puzzle. I had to cut 16 centre plates and ditch the least accurate 4 to leave 12 good ones. I then did a trial run by attaching the plates to the Dino Trunc base with very small bits of Blu-Tack and fine tune them with a needle file/sand paper. I then attached them one at a time with welding solvent whilst keeping the Blu-Tacked plates in situ. I probably spent more time fiddling with plate positions than actually making them. I strengthened the sheet with small triangular support props to stop it feeling "spongy" at the tips when gripped (worked fine).

Here's something I've not seen before:

The big centre plates no longer have anthing to show orientation, but the tri-corners (the triangular centres of the old Rainbow Cube) now have colour zones to show orientation.
When solving it, I ended up with one "corner" twisted 120 degrees. I think this has occured because one, or any other odd number of the other centres plates have been solved in a 180 degree flipped position. Btw it's stickered with 12 colours. I really don't know enough about these things. When I've got more time, I'll try to work out what's going on.

After the truncation, I noticed the puzzle looked like a certain Star Wars character. Just for fun, I added a helmet made from some card off-cuts...

Haha! That's amazing.

Also, to fix your little problem...

To rotate counter clockwise
R U' R' U' R U' R' U'

Clockwise
R U R' U R U R' U

Also, the Dino Trunc may be a Grey area with Tony, but as far as I'm concerned, mechanically they may be the same and solve the same, but this is a new puzzle regardless.

Also, do you mind if I use the Darth Dino as my avatar?

Thanks for the alg to solve the corner -it worked fine. It was a bit embarrassing asking for help with a Dino solve :)

Feel free to use/embellish/alter the Darth Dino image. If I thought it was going to be used, I would have taken a bit more care making his headwear!

Here he is without his helmet on...

I just realized I thought of this mod before when I was looking at my Rainbow Cube and thinking of shape modifications. (Funny enough, the next day, my thoughts of an octahedron transformation was released.)

I love the 3d effect when seen from a specific angle. Well done!

Justin, I love it.

Of course I had already made a 'gappy' Impossible Dodecahedron, but after you posted your Dogoc mod, I got all these new ideas for 'gappy' puzzles, using many different mechanisms. In fact, I have several 'gappy' ideas for the Rainbow Cube as well. But I missed this particular one. I'm curious about your future puzzles. Though I hope you stay away from 'my' ideas. :)

Hello.
I apologize for this bump.
Mr Justin, could you up your VDO of this cube again?
Or does anyone have its VDO, please post it?
I would like to mod this cube, but I think its turn should get stuck.
Please suggest me.
Many thanks.
