its easier to list what I don't listen to which is RAP, although some HipHop is so varied that I guess you can call some of it rap. but hardcore rap just doesn't do it. Other than that I listen to pretty much everything from Top40 to Modern Rock to Classic Rock to New Wave New Age Classical Ethnic World music Acid Jazz etc.
PS this forum will get my rank up quick

I don't listen to pure rap much either, but I did buy both albums by The Streets which are very good.
Other recent artists I bought cds of: Miles Davis, the Veils, Amy Winehouse, the Cure, Ian Dury & the Blockheads, Minnie Ripperton, Bill Withers.
Other stuff I've been listening to: Best of Blue Note, Ane Brun, Zero 7, Corduroy, Radiohead, Moloko, Placebo, the Delgados, Cream.
If that isn't a varied music taste, I don't know what is.

Everyone tries to rationalize the rap they listen to, just admit that you like rap. It's about the only good music that comes out anymore. Ever since Nirvana and Pearljam killed metal in the early 90's, Rock n Roll is still back on it's heels.
Believe me I wish there were still good metal bands around, Metallica turned into a wannabe ballad band, Anthrax changed their name to "basket full of puppies" after the anthrax mailings, Megadeth faded away, and I think Slayer and Pantera left earth to defend our planet in an intergalactic war, because I haven't heard about them in years.
A few years ago in my depression from all the horrible music I was hearing everywhere, I listened to an old Eazy E album and it reignited my love of rap, not all of it, but alot of it.
Don't be afraid to admit you like it.

I'm not knocking rap, it just doesn't resonate with me. Perhaps you have to grow with it or have some experiences with rap in the background. Most of the gangsta rap seems to be street lingo and violent and angry. When they start rapping about killing cops and stuff, I just tune out, nothing good can come of that. But I do like some of the early Beastie Boys, go figure. I think in the end music is what you make of it. Each genre has its place and time. Sometimes I'm in the mood for some Iron Maiden and other times for Robert Miles. I'll sometimes go for a week listening to a new cd I got just to absorb it like Give Up by The Postal Service which I got as a gift and appreciate it more and more with each listen.

well as far as rap goes... i dont like it...not at all, and i know skenegee has heard all about it from me before.i could never admit to liking rap in the only fact that i actually hate it, therefore its impossible to admit something that never existed. all it is are nursery rhymes read out with a beat in the background with tons of obsenities thrown in. PLUS MOST (im not saying all) but MOST of it is pointless and is saying nothing. And i also know there are few that has political values in it or other things that are of value, but thhsoe are very rare and i couldnt get myself to liking it anyways. and to say this is all opinion would be true, but think about it next time you hear something of the sort.

I'm sort of neutral with this whole rap topic. I don't really care to listen to the words in rap songs, but I do like listening to the rhythm of the words. The rhyming in a wrap song is like another instrument. The rhythm brought by the rhymes along with the backgound beat are what I pay attention to when listening to wrap. I don't really care what the rappers say, just as long as they make rhyms to a good background beat.
There's only one rapper who I think writes meaningful words. . . Tupac.
Other than rap, I like a lot of classic rock.
. . . Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Steppenwolf, rolling stones, Eric Clapton, AC/DC, led Zepplin. There's a bunch more.
I don't really care for the new rock songs. I think they all sound the same. Punk rock singers all sing with exactly the same voices, and a lot of the heavy metals songs contain too much distortion for the music to be good, plus I can never here what they're yelling about.
I'm sort of forced to listen to Jazz because my brother plays Saxaphone, and his sax can be heard in any part of the house. I'm sure the neighbors here it as well. Sometimes my brother shows me a good jazz song, but a lot of the slow jazz songs just really bore me.
. . . salsa. Yeah I like spanish music too

What does everyone listen too?
I like just about everything...................
Early Metallica
Van Halen, until Sammy ruined them
Ministry (Psalm 69)
Pantera
Rammstein
Limp Bizkit
Irish Decendants
Barra Macneils
Great Big Sea
Blue Rodeo
Gordon Lightfoot
Celine Dion
U2
Boston
AC/DC
The Who
Eminem
Black Eyed Peas
Enigma
Vangelis
ABBA
Hilary Duff
and on and on..............
I strongly disliked dance music until............... well there are these 2 young girls, my daughters, that have warped my sense of taste with regards to music
I don't understand RAP, for the most part it does nothing for me. Opera is something I think will never grow on me.
How's that for a wide variety of musical taste?
oh yeah- just what is PUNK music these days? Blink 182? really?
just reread the thread, Kid-with-the-mohawk, the bands you listed, never heard of em, but I'll give em a listen this weekend.

Clayne actually sent me a song he listens to and it rocks, however it is much different than the punk from the early 80's.

My favorite band by far is VNV NATION. It's not often that you find someone who has heard of them, but those who do like thier music are dedicated fans. I like a lot of electronic. trance, and industrial music, such as NIN, Front Line Assembly, Astral Projection, and Infected Mushroom among others.
When I want to chill out an be happy, my favorite band on the other end of the spectrum is Jamiroquai.

I suppose there are no dead heads hear, huh?
I'm lost in the 60's and 70's psychedelic stuff, and i must say the Grateful Dead is by far the greatest band ever in Americas History. Along with the dead, i'm deep into the moody blues, jethro tull, steppenwolf, cheaptrick, and tons of other bands, but i'm not gonna waste your time and my time with a list

ok lemme rephrase, i guess it(for me) is street punk, which i think is teh only good and meanigful way. most listed above arent under my circumstances punk, but to many are indeed. blink 182 i hate, strickly pop right there. tehy stole punks name and made money basically..along with many others.
i admit a lot fo it sounds the same but i focus on teh lyrics, and teh adrenaline rushes at shows..w00t, ahh gives me shrills jus thinkin bout it.
UP THE PUNX!!
for mp3s and stuff for teh casualties go to http://www.thecasualties.net
i can admit there are better more raw bands than them but they are amongst my favorites.
check out my xanga to hear tehir song called "Unknown Soldier"
http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=Clayno_Insano
fyi cubed punk, your my bud, dont think im giving you crap or anything, we both have very similar, yet different opinions on our music and im sure we understand eachother! w00t. For The Punx!!
until next time everybody
much love-CLAYNO

As promised, I gave the punks a listen. Here's the songs I listened to:
Dead Kennedys - Jesus Was a Terrorist.mp3
Anti-Flag - Angry, Young, and Poor.mp3
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 - Bad Religion - You.mp3
Subhumans - America Commits Suicide.MP3
Black Flag - Fix me.mp3
Dead Kennedys - Nazi Punks [Censored. Please be nice!] Off.mp3
Anti-Flag-Underground Network.mp3
The Unseen - Every Rose Has It's Thorn.mp3
Subhumans - Religious Wars.mp3
Subhumans - OhCanaduh.mp3
SubHumAns - Worlds Apart - 07 - Someone Is Lying.mp3
Bad Religion - Supersonic.mp3
The Unseen - Police Brutality.mp3
Dropkick Murphys - Time To Go.mp3
Black Flag - Police Story.mp3
The Casualties- Die Hards.mp3
Dropkick Murphys-Bagpipes.mp3
The Unseen - So this is Freedom.mp3
IRISH-Celtic - Irish Drinking Songs - Dropkick Murphys - Finnegan's Wake.mp3
Dropkick Murphys- The Rocky Road To Dublin.mp3
The Casualties - Fight For Your Life.mp3
Dropkick Murphys - Fields of Athenry.mp3
Pretty raw music there for some of them. The Casualties are definitely like the punk I remember. It still doesn't turn my crank.
The good news is, I really liked the Dropkick Murphys. That [Censored. Please be nice!] sounds great. Thanks for introducing me to some cool music I may never have heard otherwise.

Not listening to much at all these days, but the things I still like to hear include (in no particular order) Lou Reed (even his recent stuff), VU (of course), Tom Waits, Thelonius Monk, Captain Beefheart, Ornette Coleman... it seems to help if it takes a little effort to listen to it.
Typing in that list has made me feel really, really old, btw.

Finally someone a little closer to my ballpark. Tom Waits is one of my all-time favs. Here's a list:
Beatles
Bob Dylan
Bruce Springsteen
Harry Chapin
John Lennon
John Prine
Led Zeppelin
Leonard Cohen
Meatloaf (Bat out of Hell, of course)
Musical Scores (Phantom, Les Mis, etc)
Neil Diamond
Paul Simon (& Garfunkel)
Pink Floyd
Randy Newman
Tom Petty
Tom Waits
I have about 4000 MP3s which covers pretty much all the bases, but the above are the major players for me.

I'll just list artists that I own two or more albums of music going alphabetically through my Jukebox, as owning more than one of a single artist is a reasonable trend in music taste.
Andrew Lloyd Webber (musicals)
Basil Poledouris (soundtracks)
Bruce Springsteen (The Boss)
Antonin Dvorak (classical composer)
Enya
Fey (latin pop)
Guns N' Roses
Ludwig van Beethoven
Metallica
Pantera
Patricia Manterola (latin pop)
Paulina Rubio (latin pop)
Rolling Stones
Sarah Brightman
Slayer
Thalia (latin pop)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
That's not including a few CDs I haven't ripped into my music library yet or my collection of about 900+ loose mp3s.
Looking above I'd say my music tastes have a strong bias towards heavy metal, classical, opera, and Spanish pop (me gusta las chicas latinas!).

Love 'em. Was lucky enough to catch them live on the Division Tour in Toronto before they bottled up. Best concert I've ever been to, hands down, and I've been to more than enough to compare notes.
I don't listen to them as much as I used to, but every so often, I get into a certain "mood" where I listen to their stuff exclusively for a few weeks.
Your name suddenly has so much more character for me!

If you guys want, I have all of their (Pink Floyd) albums on mp3, I can either mail you guys a CD, or upload them to you if you want and don't have them already. Each album is actually 1 mp3 file. To me it makes sense because most of their albums should be listened to in order anyway.

i guess ill point out some stuff i dont like eh,
rap..enough said..
pop..uhh mainstream music sucks
EMO-short for emo-tional all teh bands that sing about their girlfriend dumping them and their gunna kill themselves and all that.some may include, but not restricted to, dashboard confessional, weezer, story of the year, yellowcard(also pop), juliana theory, finch, coheed and cambria(although their sound is really unique the only i think sound like them are RUSH)you know..you can tell it apart when you hear it ..
actually..i pretty much dislike anything that isnt in the street punk/ oi genre
and if that makes me ignorant to other stuff and shallow then so be it, lol.
although you sometimes run into a band that can just play so dang well (usually just plain rock), and they know how to make their instruments flow and all. those i can accept to.
the locals are usually the best eh eh eh
