I was just thinking about this puzzle. :D

It looks fantastic! Is this only the second of its kind?

Don't know why, but your pics look like fakes...

Good job on the puzzle though!

I know that there were at least two before this, so this is either the third or more.

Great job on the puzzle, this and the gigaminx are two customs that I really want.

Okamoto made the first (very high quality, as always) and produced a small number that are now very prized. It was sized the same as the Pyraminx, I believe.

Jin recently made his own, the second, based off of the Skewb Diamond. This resulted in a much larger puzzle, and only one was created as far as I know.

So Mr. Calzone's would be the third I believe. And it looks to be closer to the original from the pictures, but it is hard to judge scale.

Perhaps he can tell us about scale, his design and production?

Great job!

Dave

 I was writing the same info in my YouTube description and then came back here and saw you answered the question. Yes. I believe this is the third.

Video link added above!

Maybe the video will convince you

Edit: Here's a pic for size comparison. I can't find my ruler!

It's believable others have been built but simply haven't gotten any publicity. The premise is so tempting that it's undoubtedly been attempted many times.

Alexsandr A. Ordynets patented a mechanism in 1986 and Alexander Mack patented another mechanism in 1998. Obviously they didn't turn into commercially-successful products, but they certainly could have built prototypes of their respective mechanisms. (I can't find any evidence for or against.)

But being first or third doesn't alter Calzone's achievement. His workmanship is always so fine that it earned the coveted 'fake-looking' award! Too perfect to be real, I guess!

That actually looks VERY close to the size of Okamoto's version. I got to play with Jason's Okamoto Master Pyraminx and it was a little larger than my Pyraminx.

Thanks! That made my day! :D

Anyway......I can not take credit for designing this puzzle. I asked the designer if it were okay for me to post their name, but I haven't heard back yet. It's a great design, and I'm surprised that it hadn't been done a long time ago.

As for the size, it measures 102 mm high and 115mm along each edge while the Tomy Pyraminx shown in the picture above measures 88mm high and 102mm along an edge. Mr. Okamoto's site references his version as 104mm, but I don't know if that's the height or measurement along it's edge.

This is amazing. Great achievement!

I believe it's the fifth of its kind. After a Russian prototype (don't know if it was functional though), Katsuhiko Okamoto's small batch, one from a Chinese builder about 2 years ago, and recently Jin's.

Very nice indeed!

I think it's just the perspective (wide angle lens) combined with the textured table. Look closely at the third picture (view from above), and you'll see why the first two pictures (perspective) look odd...

Hi Dave,

After playing with Darren's, I can vouch that is it larger than a standard Pyraminx. It's about 125% larger than one if I had to guess.

Also, as Thomas pointed out, not that long ago someone posted a link to a non english speaking forum where someone else made on a la Jin (Skewb Diamond).
