Hi,

I'm new to this site, but have just built prototypes of a new twisty puzzle I designed (see pictures below) and would like to hear what people think:

Called Qubami, it's a kind of "backwards" 3x3x3 twisty puzzle which starts out ordered with 2 sides of each colour, and the goal is just to mix it up and get 3 different colours and 3 different symbols on every row and column of blocks on every face of the puzzle. Like a 3D sudoku, but with simple colours and symbols instead of numbers, and nice rounded blocks for a good feel.

It sounds simple, but it has over 43 million trillion combinations, only one solution, and you have to work out where each block goes in the first place. The chances of solving it are similar to finding a single grain of rice over the entire surface of the planet, and there are over 100,000 different puzzle configurations, each with its own secret solution.

Anyway, please check out the pictures, as well as the online game, and let me know what you think...

Many thanks,
Kelvin

It's kinda been done before, but I like the way this was pulled off. It looks fantastic! Great job!

That's a great idea, well done.

theVDude, do you have a link or reference? I don't recall seeing the idea done before.

Kinda, I mean the different sudo-cubes that are out there. There hasn't been one exactly like this, but it's been building up to it.

I kinda said what I meant weird. It's a new idea on an old idea, and I like it. :D

Does this puzzle successfully meet the terms of this competition. :D

Actually it has been done, in a more difficult way. The 9 Color Cube(you can search for it, I'm too lazy right now :D ) is a sticker mod where you "scramble" the cube into a position where there is one of each of the 9 different colored stickers on each face. Technically, it's equally as hard as this, but solving-wise there are less points of reference for each piece, so it would be harder then your particular variation.

Great job either way! Very nice execution.

Thanks for all comments so far.

Yes, it is similar to the 9 colour cube (and basically a 3x3x3 with different stickers), but more difficult as each colour can be associated with 3 copies of the same symbol on some faces, or with 3 different symbols on other faces, since the colours and symbols are considered independently.

Also, this allows the puzzle to start off in an ordered conformation, with two sides each having the same colour.

Only two people have solved it so far - a Cambridge PhD in quantum physics, and an ex-national puzzle solving Champ from Germany.

That... is... scary!!

I'm amazed that something that simple can give me such a headache :P Ingenious idea, I hope to see more brilliant mods soon

DUDE! its a tic-tac-toe cube!

I'd play with it all day to get as many sides with X's to win!

That's something very pleasing.
At first I thought it was a magnetic dice cube with some kind of stickers.
I would like to have one of these.

I don't think so. :/

- Don't try flipping things up (example: I consider a cube like this :scrambled: solved, and a cube like this :solved: scrambled)
- If such a puzzle exists already, don't enter it

Oh well, that's a really cool puzzle! Very visually pleasing.

You demonstrate that it can be solved (1.) by mixing it up :) and (2.) by color. Can it be solved by symbol as well?

Anyway: Well done!

Yes, it can also be solved by symbol, so you can go from one solution (same colour on each side) to another (same symbol on each side), then try to mix it up...

Yes, the jewel cube is similar in that colours and symbols are combined. The only difference is that I've positioned these so that the puzzle has exactly one secret "sudoku" solution in which colours and symbols are perfectly scrambled - as well as having "standard" solutions for both colours and symbols independently...

When it is solved by symbol, would there be 2 sides of each symbol?

Interestingly, the prototypes in these images are made by sticking together 27 rounded blank dice with super glue and then applying custom-made labels, so they don't twist. I also have a working prototype with the same stickers applied to a normal blank 3x3x3, but the blocks aren't rounded as I would like them. I wanted to make the full working (twisting) prototype with rounded blocks, but I haven't got into DIY modelling yet...

Perhaps someone can help me with this (I already have the special stickers), or I can look into full scale production if there's enough interest?

As you saw in your 'Solving Puzzles' thread, I like this puzzle a LOT.

How about also making something simpler like a 2x2 version?
Or maybe something even harder then this brain-buster, like a 4x4?

Hi Retr0,

Glad you like it. As it happens I did design 2x2x2, 4x4x4 and 5x5x5 versions as well, but didn't want to scare people off with these just yet - the 3x3x3 version is hard enough!

Don't you think it is kind of late to be commenting on that page. That was a pretty big bump (although I have seen larger ones...).
