Hello! I thought it might be fun to have a thread where we can share the joy of a package that has just arrived. It's kind of fun to see what other collectors have obtained, and it's also fun to show your new puzzles to people who won't think you're crazy for being so overjoyed over a plastic toy. This thread's final direction was the inspiration: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=12505&start=50I'll start with one I just received! A 4 color Dino!

OOOH, they're finally coming! This is great news. Can't wait to get mine!
And interesting paperweight there georges. How big is that cube? By the looks of it, the side length is at least twice that of a normal 3x3.

-CC10 It's just like a standard cube, save for the weight of course. It weighs (hi katsmom!) 370 grams, whereas the China made chrome cube that was sold some time ago weighs 398 grams. (the big one on the picture below)

I didn't think to take a picture while it was still in the packaging, but today I got the Turn-Key puzzle designed by Goh Pit Khiam and crafted by Eric Fuller. It is very nice and though it is based on trinary, it was still somewhat challenging and if nothing else, you can admire both the great craftsmenship and mathematical beauty of it (or at least I can; I know Roxanne wouldn't Sorry for the quality, you can see better photos here

But I get binary so trinary is just 3? Anyway, mine should come within a week or so and I'll let you know how I get on.

I wasn't saying that you didn't/wouldn't get the math, I was saying that you wouldn't appreciate the puzzle for its mathematical beauty. For instance, consider Euler's identity: e^(iπ) + 1 = 0. Do you find this beautiful? I do. It uses 5 very important constants once each: e, i, π, 1, and 0. It uses 3 fundamental operations once each: exponentiation, multiplication, and addition. And it ascribes one thing as equal to another, linking the 5 constants and 3 operation together. To me, this is just as beautiful as anything you'd find in nature. Paul Nahin wrote a 400 page book on the equation, Dr. Euler's Fabulous Formula, in which he says it is "the gold standard for mathematical beauty." Constance Reid said that it is "the most famous formula in all mathematics." Gauss is reported to have commented that if this formula was not immediately apparent to a student on being told it, the student would never be a first-class mathematician. After proving the identity in a lecture, Benjamin Peirce, a noted nineteenth century mathematician and Harvard professor, said, "It is absolutely paradoxical; we cannot understand it, and we don't know what it means, but we have proved it, and therefore we know it must be the truth." Stanford mathematics professor Keith Devlin says, "Like a Shakespearean sonnet that captures the very essence of love, or a painting that brings out the beauty of the human form that is far more than just skin deep, Euler's equation reaches down into the very depths of existence." (These quote are all from here). Are you offended now?

I know a few programming languages and have always done well in my math classes so with that background, I just loved the tern-key puzzle. It was just as fun putting it back together as it was taking it apart! I did solve it in one go but did enjoy the challenge, mechanics, and mathematics involved. I did show this puzzle to my parents and a few friends, but sadly they don't share the same appreciation. To each their own, and more fun for me! Looking forward to another solve of it!

Jason: Have you posted a recent collection picture/pictures lately? With all these fantastic puzzles that you're getting, i'd love to see everything ELSE you've got. Not to mention your, what, 5 dino stars next to each other? If you keep collecting at this rate and expand your tastes a bit you might give georges a run for his money in a few years. Key words are might and a few years.
