What are you planning on making the puzzles with? I doubt you could make it entirely of Miliput or something similar. Do you have access to a plastic molding machine like is used for puzzles?

Most of these puzzles are (or can be) based on the mechanisms of existing well-known puzzles. Quite a few of these can therefore be made, if you have the patience, by beginning with an ordinary puzzle and changing its shape by cutting it down and/or adding on epoxy putty like milliput or some such.

Have you checked the articles on Twisty? You'll see exacly what I use. But in short:

* Silicon rubber for molding
* Polyurethane resin for casting.

Anyway, go to the main site and have a look at the new articles. (Can anyone confirm if Twisty is down, I can't even access my own site from here?)

Yeah, it's just getting one. A broken domino would be more than fine. In fact, it would be more preferrable. All I need is the cross section, a corner, and edge and insides.

Yep, I could get into all that but it would make the job so much longer and harder. I'd rather duplicate an original which would be a perfect representation rather than an "interpretation".

As good as filiing milliput can be, there must some slight variances in the pieces.

Anyway, it's just easier to take an original if it exists.

About the domino. Send me a email. We might be able to do something about it.

Does it really make sense to copy the rainbow cube? After all, they can be bought for about $24. Wouldn't it take more than that just in materials and time? I can understand the other puzzles listed since they are quite rare and not produced today.

Who knows? Maybe the rainbow cube will show up at the Dollar Tree stores for only $1. (I don't know how much they cost to produce, but I would guess that the current sellers have a generous markup on their price.)

If you are still intent on copying a rainbow cube, I have 3 on order. One to keep original, another to try to turn into a Dino Cube, and a third for "who knows what" yet. I could probably loan you my spare. Already having a rainbow cube, however, I would probably prefer one of the other rare cubes that you plan on copying.

I don't know for sure, but I would guess that many of the puzzles you have listed were never produced on production molds, but rather made using prototyping methods such as polyuethane molding, milliput/putty, hacksaw, etc. I know that the puzzles that you mentioned which were made by Tony Fisher were definately made by modifying existing mechanisms. If production molds really had been made for some of these puzzles, then they probably wouldn't be as rare as they are today.

I had always hoped to modify some existing mechanisms to make some of these rare puzzles as Jaap described. Also, you may want to hold off on copying some of these puzzles since Meffert's will be soon announcing some new puzzles. Remember the Skewb Octahedron and Ultimate Skewb puzzles? Meffert released those last year by making modifications to his existing Skewb design. It wouldn't surprise me if the Octominx or other puzzles that uses his Pyraminx or Skewb mechanism could be the new releases he has mentioned.

You're quite right, I'm probably better off to order them. I'd still be interested in finding the direct source though. As far as I can see, this puzzle has never been made before. I'm probably more interested in the insides.

Things like Trajber's octa and the like, they may not have been made from molds but if the hand crafted piece was good enough, I can cast from that.

However, I've decided to move to duplicating a domino, fisher and fisher 2 cubes for the first part of the project and see how I go.

Managed to get some milliput today so we'll see how that material stands up as a single-piece prototyping material.
