Quote: ~2008 Preliminary Statistics~ 3342 New Threads (As of December 16th) [32% increase from 2007] 49586 New Posts (As of December 16th) [16% increase from 2007] 40 Nominated Builders 105 Nominated Modifications
Quote: Hello, and welcome to the beginning of the 2008 edition and second annual Puzzle of the Year competition highlighting new and noteworthy custom puzzles released by members of this great forum. First off, please remember this list is not final. The competition will be open to entries up until the last day of the year. Also, this is a compilation I constructed over the course of 3 days that involved a single person sifting through hundreds of threads. It is entirely possible I have missed something that should be included or possibly included something that shouldn't be for whatever reason. Please do not hesitate to bring these things to my attention. Also, as you will notice, there are a handful of entries after the list of nominees that are in a section titled "Questionable". These are the entries that I was not entirely sure if they are valid for whatever reason. My thoughts as to why they are in this section are included with each possible nominee. Another issue that has come up within the last year has to do with the surge of STL files. The question remains as to who should be credited for the puzzle; the builder or the designer. The method I used in the creation of this thread credits both the builder and designer, however, the puzzles in question will be listed under the builders name, with specific mention of the designer of the STL files in each case. The puzzles are also noted under the designer’s name; however these are listed under a subsection dubbed “Design Accreditation”, which acknowledges their involvement in the puzzles creation. Of course, this is not set in stone, so please, discuss the method you feel will work best for this situation. The last thing that needs to be discussed is how the voting process is going to narrow down the initial 100+ entries down to 10 finalists and eventually 1 puzzle. Given the numerous amount of puzzles worthy of at least making it to the final 10, it seems a little unfair to narrow down the first round straight to 10. An option that has come to mind is to break up the entries into groups; for example clumping up the months into three 4 month (trimesters) clusters or four 3 month (quarters) clusters. However grouping them in this manner leaves unbalanced groups with ranges of 19 and 15 for trimesters and quarters respectively. However, clustering them in an irregular manner (January-May / June-September / October-December) leaves a range of only 4 between the groups. From here, separate threads can be constructed to run preliminary rounds of voting to narrow down each of the three groups down to 10 puzzles per group. If the previously mentioned process is used, the semi-finals can be run one of two ways. One option is to narrow down the three groups of 10 down to 3 finalists per group, and then hosting the finals with the nine remaining entries. The other way to run semi-finals would be to combine the 3 groups of 10 into a single group of 30, then once again narrow it down to 10 finalists. I believe the second choice would be better, as it would allow more than 3 puzzles per month based group to be eligible for finals in case that there are more entries worthy of being in the final 10 in a single group. This is just one possible method that can be used for voting, and I’m open to hear opinions and suggestions on this matter. Summing up, there are several things that I would like feedback from the community on to make this annual event a smooth running and memorable one that everyone can enjoy. Quote: • Evaluation of current list of nominees. --- Am I missing any possible entries? --- Did I include one that should in ineligible? • Which of the puzzles on the “Questionable” list can be considered valid entries? • How should credit be recognized? --- SLT file Designers --- Physical puzzle Builders • How should voting be held? --- Does the method discussed seem like a good option? --- Do you have any suggestions for the voting process? • Should we have a miniature side competition? --- Best Newly Mass Produced Puzzle of 2008? • Any other feedback
There is one final thing I would like to add, and I just want to say that I am aware of how dull and pictureless this thread is. Have no fear, come voting time, there will be plenty. WOW! I can't believe there were so many new puzzles made! Unreal! Great list, and great work compiling all that info. One small change- Adam Cowan also designed the twist cubie, listed under my builds.

No mention of the recent Shade Cube by Hidetoshi? It's a sticker mod, but with very different stickers.

Hopefully I won't have to edit that beast terribly much. Also, for the two of you who have posted and for the others who are reading through the thread before posting; please provide a some feedback on how I initially set up the competition. I want to make sure everything sounds good and no one finds any error or something else wrong with my system. Also, if better or easier methods come up, I'd be happy to change stuff to make everything work at it's best.

Noah,
Much appreciated. I know I have mentioned that we should have a Puzzle of the Month/Year thread - I'm glad you actually got to it! Great Job! I know it must've taken a long time to put together, especially with all that info.
THANK YOU!

THANK YOU! And Thank You for the compliments. It was worth the effort. Hopefully I have another trick up my sleeve for after the PotY competition. But that will have to wait for later. I'm about to catch a plane to go home for the first time in 4 months. P.S. Dear Future Noah, Please add this puzzle into the list. I'd do it now, but I'm kinda rushed for time. viewtopic.php?f=15&t=11894Regards, Past Noah

Ditch the Chromium for now. It isn't ready for prime time, although I hope to fix that before the end of the year... Please add my Kilominx, completed July 23 2008, smack in the middle of 2008. Dave

1-Evaluation of current list of nominees ---I think your current list of entries is very complete. Although, I would add Scott's Junior Barrel as a nominee, becasue it was created about the same time as Matt's junior barrel. ---I think Alokin's/Flambore's Cylinder 3x3x3 should be removed from the list of entries. It has been made before, specifically by Tony Fisher, and many other builders. I do realize this version is a bit different, but regardless, I think it should be removed from the list of entries. ---I also think Yodor's Spheraminx should be removed from the list of entries, becasue it has been made before, specifically by Jurgen Brandt and Adam Zamora. 2-Which of the puzzles on the “Questionable” list can be considered valid entries? ---I think MarkSS's Skewb Cylinder should be considered a valid entry, because although it is similar to Scott's Mental Puck, they are both very different puzzles. ---I also think Superman [Designed by Scott Bedard] and Lee Tutt's Hexagonal Prisms should be considered valid entries, because it is a new puzzle, despite being executed by 3 different people. I would credit all 3 persons involved with this puzzle in the entry. ---I would also consider Flambore & Superman's Triangular Prisms [Designed by Adam Cowan] valid entries for the same reasons I think the Hexagonal Prisms should be considered as valid entries. I also think all 3 persons involved with this puzzle should be credited. 3-How should voting be held? ---I like the idea of holding polls based on the quarters in which the puzzles were built. This allows members of the forum to vote for multiple puzzles, and makes for an easier choosing of the top 10 or 30 depending on how the voting will be run. 4-Should we have a miniature side competition? ---No, it would be too complicated on top of the Puzzle of the Year 2008. 5-Any other feedback ---I would just like to thank you, Noah, for having the the courage to create such a complete and organized post. It made reading an absolute delight. I wish all posts could be as well organized as this one.

Great job on the list Noah, but you're missing my square pyramid! viewtopic.php?f=15&t=11580Despite there being over a dozen puzzles I'd rather see win Puzzle of the Year, it'd be an honor to see mine listed up there amongst the amazing puzzles that had been built this year. Especially since I'm relatively new to the forum, I'd see it as a major accomplishment, and hope that next year I'll have the chance to have many more puzzles nominated.

Wow, so many amazing puzzles! My top ten are (in semi-random order): 1, 2, 3 tie) Toru, Rua, 24-Cube/Rua tekau ma-wha 4, 5 tie) Teraminx, Pentultimate 6, 7 tie) Holey Megaminx, 3x3x3 Circle Cube 8, 9, 10 tie) Axis Cube, Nightmare Cube, Dino Rhombic Dodecahedron I placed 1, 2 and 3 where they are because I can't begin to fathom the mechanism (even though there are mech pics of the 24-Cube!). 4 and 5 are there because of the sheer amount of effort that had to be put into them. 6 and 7 are there because of a clever (and difficult) adaptation of some existing mechanism, with very pleasing results. 8, 9, and 10 are there because of their cleverness/evilness. I do hope that someday we will see a nightmare wall cube!

Thank you for your great job. It is a clever idea to group the puzzles by time, I cannot think of a better grouping method.

Great Noah! It's fun to his name out there ^^ Glad my nickname start with an "A", I'm on the "top" of the list I still have two questions: How much vote by person? 10 as last year? I think that 10 is better, because if it's 1 by person, only a few puzzles are gonna have votes but if it's 10, there's gonna be a biggest range of puzzles and by the way, people won't be in a dilemma If a puzzle is completed before or on Dec. 31 2008, is the puzzle eligible? This bring me another one, the vote are gonna be after Dec 31, right? Cheers ,Nikola EDIT:Forget my questions, I've forgot to read ^^'

Wow! Thanks for this great list you have probably past so much time on it! I think you missed the Apollo's ones: His four diamond puzzle: http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=11539The Dragon Tear, The four diamond and the Baby Face ( I think all these are new 2008 puzzles right?) ,Dragan

It seems we are going to vote 30 this year. Can we just vote 30 puzzles directly out of all, instead of voting 10 for each period? I don't know which method is better.
I have already pick 24 or so, I am afraid I will drop some of my favorite puzzles if vote by time-groups.

Progress is being made. In the new year we'll get some new puzzles in and I will start a thread about how people can help me help Sandy help the database Dave

I guess the UNSCRAMBLED came out this year, although I'm not particularly happy with any version that's been available, and hardly anyone's played with/analyzed it yet, so it's still sorta below the radar.
I've got a bunch of puzzles which were successfully prototyped this year, but haven't really been announced yet, so maybe next year. Mostly collaborations with Oskar van Deventer, and actually there are a few which are just Oskar.

Hello,
Sorry for the delay everyone, but I've had some issues in my life involving living arrangements that need to be taken care of, and I have to let those take precedence over my hobby at the moment. It doesn't help a new semester has also started and my current living arrangement is close to uninhabitable. Once I can get things more-so under control, I'll finish this up first thing. Hopefully that will happen by my 20th birthday this upcoming Saturday, if things work out smoothly (or as smooth as they can in this sort of situation). Anyways, my apologies, and hopefully this will be up and fully functional by Saturday.
Regards and Happy Puzzling, Noah Hevey
P.S. Would anyone be so inclined as to compile all of the threads of puzzles that are qualified and ones that are in a grey area that have been made since the creation of this thread? It would help speed up the process greatly once I can return my full attention to this thread and be greatly appreciated.

Alokin, please refrain from bumping this topic. Either PM Noah to remind him or wait for him to get to it when he is not as busy.
