Quote:
RUBIK'S CHEESE
65mm diam by 32mm thick.
Disc cut by three diameters.
Any half can be turned over.
Six colours, but each sector has two colours _ top and bottom _ making three types of sector.
From Hungary, labelled Rubik's Sajt Logikai Jatek.

That's the entry in David Singmaster's cube collection.

I am speaking of this puzzle:

Image

I know of several others: Dodd,

Image

Hendrik,

Image

PuzzleManiac,

Image

and

Image

from retronom.hu with the following text:
Rubik sajt- Laurie
Köbüki (nem ellenőrzött), 2008, augusztus 24 - 19:37

Eddig azt hittem, hogy valamennyi rubik találmányt
ismerek.Ezt még soh'se láttam./ Még a yuotube-on sincs ilyen./

I'd be grateful for a non-machine translation of this.

The only packaged Rubik's Sajt I have ever seen is to be found on Puzzlemaniacs web pages:
http://www.puzzlemaniac.com/Collections ... _SAJT.html

Here the beautiful package:

Image

So I have two of these.
Image Image

Whereas green, orange, red, yellow and blue are identical on both puzzles, there is one with a sixth purple color whereas the other one has a light-blue/grey sixth color.

The retronom.hu website has another Rubik's Sajt picture with the 'grey' color. All the other pictures I found show the purple color.

Who has more pictures of Rubik's Cheese?
Do other color combinations exist?
Thank you.

Ah yes, the great elusive Rubik's Sajt.
Here's another picture of the one you recently won on eBay Georges.
Image

and one more from retronom.hu

Image

By the way, here is the patent. Shiftable element puzzle

I have never seen any other colour combinations of the cheese. Maybe one is official Rubik's and the other is a knockoff? We cannot know until we see one of each type in package, and packaged cheeses are VERY rare as you well know.

Maybe I will contact János Kovács about it to see if he has any interesting information or history.

Oh, do you know János?
I hear he is a very occupied person and nearly never answers emails.
(at least he never answered my three mails)
I hope you will be successful.

Here are some additional images. It looks they are not different from yours though. The first is my own Cheese.

Image Image Image Image

I have heard stories of the existence of a different type of Cheese, where the colours of one of the two layers are rotated 1 piece (I don't know how to explain this properly), so you get 6 different kind of pieces. I'm sure it exists, but I have never seen one.

Well, I was successful. He got back to me in just 1 hour.

He writes (the following is a paraphrase - I believe there are rules on quoting private communication)

Quote:
I will have to ask Mr. Rubik.
I don't have very much information on the colours, but I know the standard one was produced in a cream colour.

Puzzling! Cream colour? Let's see what Mr. Rubik says about it - if anyone knows, it's the man himself!

When I entered the twisty puzzle world, I thought that Rubik's Cheese was the holy grail for twisty puzzle collectors. So I was very happy to find one last year. But after seeing all the different Cheeses in this topic, it seems that everybody has one. :-)

I assume Georges refers to 'Richard' Richard.

Gathering posted colour combinations so far:

Common Versions
[OR-BL][OR-BL][GRY-RE][GRY-RE][GRE-YE][GRE-YE] (has Grey-White Segment)
[OR-BL][OR-BL][PUR-RE][PUR-RE][GRE-YE][GRE-YE] (has Purple-Red Segment) - This is confirmed to be an official colour scheme as it is the one in the packaged picture.

"Katsmom's Version"
[GRY-GRE][GRY-RE][OR-RE][OR-YE][BL-YE][BL-GRE] (no unique segments)

"Anthony's Version"
[OR-RE][RE-PUR][PUR-BL][BL-GR][GR-YE] (has no unique segments)

Unsure - Hendrik's Version
[OR-BL][OR-BL][YE-GRE][YE-GRE][RE-DarkRE][RE-DarkRE] (has a DarkRed-Red Segment) - yellow is on the same side as orange in this version... or is it just solved differently, and that is actually purple? (like Thomas's)

This may sound like a stupid question, but why is there still a patent if they don't produce them anymore?

The patent EXISTS because it is on file. It is no longer enforced however.

It's like asking, why can I download a copy of the USB 1.1 specification when it isn't used any more?

It may sound like a stupid question...

Hello,
As far as I remember, and I have just checked in my pictures album, I haven't seen any Rubik's cheese when I was in rubik's studio last year while in World champ. Janos kindly made me visited the studio and I had the great chance to see the different showcases in his office.
I saw a lot of amazing puzzles, like prototypes, but no cheese at all. Confirmed when I was in hungarian open 1 month ago and visited, again,RUBIK studio's offices. I also had diner with M. Erno RUBIK but we have discussed only a little bit about collection, not a lot. Next time I will !!

My cheese, bought last year on ebay is the one with duplicates pieces. as seen in my picture, sorry I haven't a dedicated picture of it alone :(

I'm not so sure that Jaap's one is the same or the one with all parts different let me check in my pictures .... oh, ok, it is the same as mine.
As a gift for you, since I am custom builder and very curious of how it is assembled, I have dismantled it one day and here is the result , so I do have a picture of a cheese alone  :

Well, the UFO has the same core and internal pieces, but then there are two outer layers of sliding parts attached to them. (And the core is built a little more solidly too.) So it's very similar.

2007-12-19 £256.00 (to Philippe, $515,00, 230203001780)

Hi all, Sorry I know this is off topic :S You seem to know a lot the collectors.I just wanted to know if someone could give me some info about Philippe. It's because a Philippe bought my Golden box and I Didn't had any news about it even when I send him e-mails. Is he a big collector? The Philippe I'm talking about is from France. I was wondering when is the puzzle now :)

Please ignore this if it doesn't concern you. Anyone can PM me about it.

Thanks!

Thanks Georges for all those pics! Now I see that the puzzle has 6 moving pieces and not 12 as I thought. This is probably very rare right?

It's rare but there has been an influx of them on eBay recently.

Getting one packaged with original multicoloured string, label and instructions - now that's rare.

But the golden sticker is missing.
If that wouldn't be missing, it were even rarer!

And I've noticed they all come from the same seller usually. The same person has also sold many original Dominos, and a few of the new production Supernovas. That's where I got my own Domino.

They exist, and here is mine. I got it from ebay Germany for a whopping 141 euros along with 3 other non-issue/trivial puzzles.

It is obviously faded, but I still love it. It has been a long long wait and since I bid on a very fuzzy picture, I can't complain. Here is the inside of it. You can see the original grey side is a lavender color. It is very hard to destinguish between the blue and the green. The mechanism doesn't look as robust as The one posted by Georges.

Thanks Katsmom. To update the variations list,

Common Versions
[OR-BL][OR-BL][GRY-RE][GRY-RE][GRE-YE][GRE-YE] (has Grey-White Segment)
[OR-BL][OR-BL][PUR-RE][PUR-RE][GRE-YE][GRE-YE] (has Purple-Red Segment) - This is confirmed to be an official colour scheme as it is the one in the packaged picture.

"Katsmom's Version"
[GRY-GRE][GRY-RE][OR-RE][OR-YE][BL-YE][BL-GRE] (no unique segments)

"Anthony's Version"
[OR-RE][RE-PUR][PUR-BL][BL-GR][GR-YE] (has no unique segments)

Unsure - Hendrik's Version
[OR-BL][OR-BL][YE-GRE][YE-GRE][RE-DarkRE][RE-DarkRE] (has a DarkRed-Red Segment) - yellow is on the same side as orange in this version... or is it just solved differently, and that is actually purple? (like Thomas's)

and according to Janos K. ... cream? :?
