Hello all! I think this doesn't belong to Puzzle Building simply since it's such a simple puzzle. And I just wanted to show the new SuperSquare1 too. From the new AWESOME Super Square 1 puzzle it's so easy to get the Star Prism done, simply by swaping pieces, then making a couple of new stickers. I've also disassembled the SuperSquare and taken some pictures of the mechanism: http://www.darubik.com/?page_id=204I personally love them. Hope you too! Cheers! David

nice, I imagine the orientation on the middle layers is a bit painful

Very cool mods!
Do different Super Square-1's have different colors on the top and bottom? Mine is red/orange. Yours are green/blue and white/yellow. I'd hope there would be some consistency...
BTW, how do you take these things apart?

Look at this pic Between the 2 fiirst layers and the other two. There is the line of the screw. See that this line is perpendicular to the upper white line.

Thanks Juanan! I did it! Woo Hoo! 20 years of playing with these things and I finally built one! Ok, so it was simple, but remember, I'm not one of those engineering types. I'm an English Teacher. And darned proud of myself right now too!

so if I understand correctly, there are no modifications to be made to anything in order to create these different variations? All you're doing is swapping pieces from different puzzles (assuming you have enough puzzles to swap pieces from)?

Yes, only swapping pieces you can make this. with 3 puzzles you can make 2 star prisms and 1 dodecagonal prism . The problem ............ the stickers Are not enough for the 3 puzzles.....

juanan wrote: The problem ............ the stickers are not enough for the 3 puzzles..... Sorry, I don't get it, why would that be the case? If you get a set of stickers per Super-Square-1 you order, you should have stickers for all pieces you re-use. Or don't you get stickers at all? In that case you'd have to cut them youself from cubesmith vinyls, in which case you can prepare as many as needed. So either way, I don't get it ... Cheers Takrl

The dodecagonal prism has 14 faces, then you need 14 colours.
The stickers of the 4 layes saquare1, are of 6 colours.

I agree...I don't really get it either...since the puzzles come with stickers and each piece would have a sticker...when it's transferred from one puzzle to the next, it would still be stickered...maybe you mean since the pieces (such as the small pizza slice pieces) come from different sides of the puzzle to make one side on the 'new' puzzle, they aren't the same color...therefore you need to cut more of the same color to match the new side of the 'new' puzzle? ....I think that's what you mean...

juanan wrote: The dodecagonal prism has 14 faces, then you need 14 colours. The stickers of the 4 layes saquare1, are of 6 colours. Right, I see what you mean. But having all 14 faces different colors would make solving quite easy, since you could arrange the pieces in any configuration. Having two-coloured pieces would make life much more difficult, since the orientation of the pieces has to be followed (a bit like on a supercube). Either way, it would require manual work to prepare stickers ... Cheers Takrl

There are enough stickers to physically cover all the faces, but to make it look good, you'll need to make yourself some stickers. I did this by buying a bunch of different Square-1 sheets from cubesmith. He has tons of great colors.

so, when taking the puzzle apart you have to push a screwdriver down between the layers of it and fish around for a screw? how would you get it back in??

it's a bit easier to put it back together, because you can find the screw when the puzzle is very loose no problem.

How do you solve the regular one? Is it hard? I mean the 4 layer one.

I would guess that it's like solving two square-1's at the same time. the 1st and 4th layers are the top and bottom layers of a square-1 and the 2nd and 3rd are another. I don't have one though so this is only a guess

Yeah, I solve it from the inside out.
Basically, I start with cube shape on both layers, doing them simultaneously. Then I use my normal square-1 method on the inner layer, which reduces the puzzle to a normal square-1.
The hardest part is figuring out corner "orientation" on the inner layers. You have to know your color scheme and just see which ones are bad and which are good.

Actually, each cube has 4*4 = 16 corner pieces and 4x4 = 16 edge pieces. For a star prism you need 6*4 = 24 corner pieces and for a dodecagonal prism you need 12*4 = 48 edge pieces. If he buys 3 puzzles to mod he gets 3*16 = 48 of each, so he can make exactly 2 = 48/24 star prisms and 1 = 48/48 dodecagonal prism. And if he buys 4 he has one normal super sq-1 left over
