I was wondering if I filled in the hollow cubies of my cube with polyester resin (or similar) would it make the movement/speed of my cubing better?

Also, is there any reason the cubies are hollow or is it just a price thing/easier to mold etc?

The early type Rubik's cube (Politechnica 1978-1979) has almost solid cubies. So the cube is a bit heavy, this however does not improve movement nor does the cube turn better. Actually the spring tensions is at its max on all Politechinca cube e.g. the center screw are very tight, I think this was done to support solid cubies.

I never tested this type of cube for speed, since it is a collectible. But I do not think it is a good idea to use solid cubies as improvement, but feel free to experiment.

FYI Seventowns has a small development center that investigate and test cube improvements. The latets improvement on the Rubiks.com type cube is that they design better stickers. Also there are some ideas to make a cube more suitable for movement and speed! Do not ask for details because I can not supply these.

didnt they recently changed the kernal size to improve turning. Cause when i take a 2002 cube and a current cube, the kernals look smaller and the new cubes turn a lot better right out of package. Just wonderin

I see is no difference in the new kernel of the Rubik's.com type and the old cube kernel, In the new type the center is not so thight asseble and I assume they are now lubricated out of the package.
