My new puzzle; "Toru" (it's Maori for "three"). The name comes from the 3x3 look of each face.

The facts:

- Toru a rhombic dodecahedron, the slices are parallel to the faces.
- Toru is made from 151 custom built pieces--not a modification of anything.
- Toru is very difficult--it is to the Helicopter / Bevel cube what the Pyraminx Crystal / Brillic is to the Megaminx.
- Toru needs some work yet; the stickers don't really stick to this material, and the movement needs a little adjustment.
- Toru looks freakin' cool!

(And yes, Toru changes shape in a "jumblable" way)

Eeeeeeeeeeee!!

Whoa!

I have serious difficulty getting my head round the movement! The "cubic" look of the rhombic dodecahedron makes the turns look really weird.

Presumably if you stick to 180 degree turns it does not change shape?
[Edit. This can't be right]
Is it the 90 degree turns that "jumble" it? I could be missing all sorts of stuff here!
[Edit. 90 degree turns don't work. This messes with my mind! Can you do a sequence of pictures "jumbling" it in stages?]

The mech would be very interesting to see!

A SERIOUSLY desirable puzzle!

More and more puzzles are coming out that I seriously want, yet cannot afford.

This is fantastic. I've been wanting to see a Face-Turning Rhombic Dodecahedron for so long.

You've got a really cool puzzle the.drizzle! I wish I had this puzzle! It would be a challenge to solve! :D

This type of puzzle reminds me of the puzzles at GelatinBrain. I think you could make a lot of these puzzles!

I totally agree with what you have to say there. What mech does this puzzle use? I swear I thought this was on GelatinBrain.

Stickers don't adhere well to coarse surfaces and I've had mixed results on cast polyurethane pieces as well. Rubiks branded vinyl stickers will bubble no matter what. So far Cubesmith stickers are holding up a lot better and in most cases dont' show any bubbling on a smooth cast surface. However even a minor bump seems to "seed" an imperfection and the sticker will slowly start to bubble.

Wow, that's quite a response--thanks!

Here is what I can tell you right now about this puzzle:

1. I can't see how Toru will ever be mass produced, small run or otherwise. While there are only 10 unique pieces plus the core to this puzzle, all but only a few of them are based on oddball spherical shapes which would be totally impractical to make a die for. Bummer really, as the extra hardness of moulded ABS would help quite a bit I think.

2. All the pieces of this copy of Toru were produced via FDM 3D printing. The stickers don't stick because I did zero to the outer surface of the puzzle, hoping they would simply stick. No luck there, but I already know how to fix this problem. It'll just take some more time...

3. The movement is not-so-perfect yet, primarily beacause the triangular pieces can catch on each other if the allignment is not basically spot-on, and since the angles are so shallow, the pieces tend to knife-edge each other apart. Bram has already suggested an approach to dealing with this problem that I think may work, so I'll give it a go.

4. Once I get the motion and stickers cleaned up, I'll post a video--no sooner. :)

5. I took hardly any pictures while assembling Toru, thus I can't share much. I'll take some more when I take Toru apart for tuning.

6. Toru is actually second in series of two designs I made, the first being Rua. I mentioned that I have fully created the design near the end of this thread. For some lengthy logistical reasons I made Toru first, but I think Rua will be coming soon as well. Gott like that!

7. I'm *really* overwhelmed at the postive response I've recieved for this puzzle! :)

Gotta run, cheers!

EDIT:

Also, this puzzle basically corresponds to 3.3.5 on the gelatinbrain applet page, only fully functional. Woot!

That first picture fooled me a bit since it looks so much like a cube. We all know of cause that rhombic dodecahedrons have this interesting characteristic. It did make me wonder though if "that cube" could be made also. Basically a fully functional cube with just four corners rotating also. I haven't given it much serious thought but a possible discussion for a different thread.
