People are going to start and post in pointless threads no matter what (WWYDI thread).
I would like some type of ranking because I liked having some gage of seniority.

You can get that from the joined date. And the ranking only showed who posted frequently, which doesn't indicate any kind of seniority.

True, I have posted in it. But not to up my post count (I'm actually glad it's gone now).

I wish there was a thread just to talk-communicate about things, other than puzzles, I guess just to know more about the people we are talking to.

This community has grown tremendously and I guess people want to share and talk more than just puzzles. :D

Just my two cents though.

In regards to seniority, I'm sure we are still a small community to know who those people are. Always providing us with great knowledge about puzzles and the likes!! Besides, to my knowledge, no one has ever pulled rank here. I think we are a better forum for that...

Yay.
I think this may reduce the number of useless posts in useless thread to get their post count up. But some of the useless threads are kinda fun to post in one in a while just because.

I'm glad the ranking is gone also. I only made it to a 2x2x2. I like the community growing because we can network with more people. I feel higher ranked now that the ranking is gone. The stupid posting has caused me to only read in three of the forum topics, but like I said before the bigger this forum is the better it is for all of us for networking and trading etc, so I'm happy there's a big interest in twistypuzzles.com.

I think it is a good thing that they have been taken off.

Anyone who checks the Forum regularly knows who is a serious poster/ builder/ collector/ cuber (and who isn't) very quickly. I can't see what the ranking system added at all.

Maybe, because some people did want to increase rank, they would take more time to answer questions that they may have otherwise just skipped over.

I'm glad it's gone, it really was useless; join dates are enough.

The ranking was always making you think about something pointless.

[Edit] I didn't mean to copy you bcp on bcp.

It wasn't really important.

As far as a gauge of seniority, what qualifies? Post count? Join date? Number of puzzles in a collection? Members IQ?

Personally, I didn't care for it. Happy to see it go.

Hi :-)

I propose another way of rating. Why not base the rating on how many times a person's posts are being read, or even better: how many times they get quoted? This raises many technical questions of course. But counting these things is FAR better than solely counting posts or looking at when a member joined. My rating would indicate the USEFULNESS of a person's total body of posts. Then again, everyone has their own belief of what is a useful post. So not having ANY rating is also not that bad 8-)

Both techniques are still flawed.

Solution: each user has a rating. Each post they make can be rated +1 or -1 by everyone and this effects their rating.

But we don't need a rating system, reputation is good enough.

lol, aoeu :P

No ranking or rating could help.

Imagine if all newbies conspire to make the childish posts "useful", while turn the
interesting ones to "useless".

Then from twisty puzzle forum, we will have the twisted pudding forum.
But reputation should always do the job.

;)

Unlikely. (Rankings could also be moderated)

The biggest problem is a good implementation and upkeep.

Reguardless, reputation is more than enough.

I am obviously in the minority here but it just seems like a normal forum thing that I think should stay. I am not bothered by the nxnxn ranking but I'd like to see a basic post count. I instinctively take more notice of someone on a higher one. As for people only out to get as many as possible I suspect they get bored and go elsewhere before they build any serious amount.

I kindof agree on Tony with this one. I always looked for the people with 6x6 ranks to answer my questions, just because I felt they had been around longer and knew what they were talking about.

But the forum was also different when I joined it. Nobody really posted a whole lot, not to the extent people do today. I think things started exploding when Pembo started posting more... (Ha, I had to blame it on him :))

Finally, what DOES show seniority? I'm gonna have to go with age on this one.

By the number of posts you had, you were a 6x6x6. So you yourself didn't have the knowledge to answer your own questions. That just shows how worthless it is to look at the rankings.

A Karma system? You can give a karma point per hour. You find a post. If it is good, you give them plus one, if it is pointless you give them minus one.

I don't think anything but a kind of reputation system would be appropriate. (If I were designing the system I would implement it recursively: give one or two people who are very trusted and have been around for a long time a reputation of +1 (and have everyone else start at 0), and then only allow people with a positive rating to rate others up or down, and only let a specific user rate another specific user once every month or so.)

The reason is that you will always have people who are very new to the forum, perhaps just showing up to post a few awesome mods they have created, but very skilled in puzzle mods or very knowledgeable; and on the other hand people who make large numbers of bad posts in Off-Topic or something, and who amass a huge post count without being able to contribute information or puzzles to the community. Post count can be useful in some situations but I think the only fair system would be a reputation-based one, because it's the only situation that would really let you recognize these types of people automatically.

The forum is a community.

Just think about that for a second.

How do you learn someone's worth within a community? There are a number of ways to go about it and I can't tell you what is right for you. That said I have trouble believing that when you enter a new community (neighborhood, club, business, whatever) you ask everyone, "How much have you spoken since you joined this community?" and evaluate each person's worth based on the answer to that question.

I also have trouble believing that you figure things out by keeping a running tally of positive and negative feedback each person has accumulated from other members of the community.

On the other hand you might. Just because I have trouble believing something doesn't mean it is false.

I think that there are a couple of things that could help discourage people from making useless posts. First off, I don't think that we need an off-topic section. I know I have posted in it a bit, but if you want to talk about stuff other than puzzles, then why are you on TWISTYPUZZLES.com?

If people want some sort of ranking system, I would suggest that we have a post quality ranking. Quality can also be determined by if they use proper spelling and grammar (unless english isn't their first language, then that would be rude to put them down for bad grammar.) On every post, you could rank it out of ten. The persons rank would be the average rank of all of their posts. The only problem is that some people would not give appropriate ranks to posts.

I think it actually be good to limit the amount of times that you can post per day (5?).

I agree... I don't know jack about puzzles compared to the people here, even though I have a huge collection.

Most of my posts, would have been asking questions, not answering them. :P

However, if I do know an answer to a question, I will be sure to answer it to the best of my knowledge.
