Guys, been looking through Jaap's puzzle ideas page and one puzzle strikes me as quite conceiveable:

Image

from page:

http://www.org2.com/jaap/puzzles/ideas.htm

This would only require cutting a circle from the centre of each side on a 2x2x2 oddzon cube and creating a triangular piece that slips a tongue under and over the hole. I'll do up a pic to explain the idea.

Does anyone see any technical issues?

That is the kind of mechanism I was thinking of when I wrote that up. It has been patented, and you can see it on Joshua Bell's site:

and look for:

Looks like a pretty sound idea to me.

You could even design the attachments in such a way that you could do a turn of the attachments (where ever four colours meet at a point). Now that I think about it, this is probably what you were talking about. I'll upgrade "sound idea" above to "brilliant"! Why am I typing out all my thoughts instead of just editing the message? Strange.

The hole would have to be fairly deep into the face, because at the 45 degrees point of a normal 2x2x2 twist, the upper portion of the attachment's mecanism is exposed. If you push on that piece at that point, it relies on the depth of the hole to keep from falling off.

Cool idea though.

Yes, I remember seeing this about three years ago but I disregarded it as not possible. After seeing Jaap's picture, those parts came back to mind and I modelled them last night.

Then I decided that a 4x2x2 would be the way to go first... therefore... (see new post for pics and idea)
