Hello,

I recently gained access to a laser cutter, and had a few extra minutes. Back when I first started, I trolled through the old posts, articles, etc and found this puzzle (early references are to Katsuhiko Okamoto and Jurgen Brandt as discoverers). I'd tried a few times with plastic sheet, but I didn't ever have the skills or patience to finish the project (in the photos you can see evidence of my attempts, as well as tries for a Dino Cube).

The laser-cutter gave me the precision that I wanted, but still, placement of the pieces is critical to avoid catching. As this is simply a prototype, there is significant catching on the pieces and it may be beneficial to round the pieces somewhat, giving it a feel somewhat like modern speedcubes in terms of looks.

I used clear acrylic this time, leading to some options:

a) SmaZ - style outline stickers (very attractive)
b) The above, with the inner puzzle also stickered (would lead to gluing challenges)
c) Black acrylic - this would allow for attractive application of the above rounding, particularly with a black base puzzle

I have shown the original CorelDRAW template as well, simply because it looks neat.

May I make a suggestion for the stickers? Put solid black stickers over the white plastic that can be seen through the extensions (the part that you glued - though maybe it would also be cool to sticker those square bits too, like you mentioned), and then sticker the tips with Smaz-style open stickers.

Extending the rainbow cube into Octahedron? Very nice idea and nice looking as well!

About stickers, Smaz style is a good idea. May be you can sticker the inner one. and then scramble the whole puzzle to sticker the outer acrylic. So you'll have two solved state for this puzzle. Well but it may not as good looking as usual sticker though.

My suggestion would be a multi color version:
Outline stickers to the octahedron (8 colors), and solid stickers to the inner 6 square faces.
so it would be 14 colors in total.
