I just found out that my local university is offering free 3D printing on their Makerbot 2X until July. I have never designed my own puzzles, but I would like to test this out in case I ever decide to try it. I have some quick questions:

    1. Would anyone be willing to share some STL files so that I can test print? Doesn't have to be anything fancy.
    2. How long might a small puzzle take to print?
    3. Would each piece need to be printed separately, or can they be done all at once?
    4. Is the Makerbot 2X a good printer? Will it be able to print complex models, such as those seen in more advanced puzzles?
    5. Anything else I should know?

Thanks in advance! Hopefully this will be the spark I need to start making my own puzzles.

Hi,
1) If you do a search on the forum for "free stls" you can find some easy puzzle stl files to print. Or you can search on thingiverse.com
2) Small pieces take about 10-15 to print depending on the infill and speed you set it at
3) You can do multiples, but I would limit it too 2 hour prints just in case your print fails at some point.
4)It is a good DESK TOP PRINTER, simple mechanisms will work with .2 mm resolution, I would not do anything too complex
5) here is what I made on a makerbot replicator 2 which is very similar link!

The printer is a Makerbot Replicator 2 and it prints in PLA filament

Thanks for the reply, Kuhrik. I was able to find several free simple puzzles that I will be trying out. The quote above is from your other thread. I see the 2X prints to ABS instead of PLA. How will this compare? Your Icosaminx looks nice, btw.

ABS and PLA will print in about the same resolution; however, ABS does come with some advantages. ABS not as hard as PLA, yet it is more flexible and suitable for puzzles. You can also smooth ABS easily with plastruct bondene or acetone I believe. PLA is less reactive and therefore cannot be smoothed, except with harsher solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF). I think ABS is superior because you can get a nicer finish and the puzzle will have more flexibility.
