While I am waiting for my stickers to come in for the 4x4x2 I have started on something new, trying to get a ball out of a megaminx. So far so good, here it is partially base shape sanded :) About 1/3 of the way done I think.

I intend to contact Oliver and ask for globe stickers.. to have an earth on this puzzle would be awesome.

Hmm.. makes me think of making a stand for it too..

Thanks! Got the tip in the facebook group that I also posted this in by Traiphum to fill first.

When the master speaks you don't continue, you stop and do what the master says hehe ;) So.. currently filling the pieces :)

Congratulations! I have to say it is a brilliant idea, so much easy to get the ball shaped out of a megaminx than other cube shaped twisty puzzles!!!

After partially following up on Traiphumi's advice I filled the edges and put new corners in with filler inside. Next is sanding the thing to shape and then hope it looks ok heheh. Very curious alright!

If I were you, I would take Traiphum's advice like you did. There is no reason to deviate from what the master of mods instructs.

Uhm.. I don't quite get what you mean now.. you're saying that I didn't follow it and then you said I did in the same sentence? Hehe, a bit confusing, sorry ;)

Getting there though, and I have to fill up holes where the milliput didn't fill the corners proper. Also two centers and an edge piece need filling up a wee again. RAAAH.

Needs a lot more work still  ;) *groan*

Thank you so much!

I was going up and down swearing at the thing for not becoming a ball shape, and then slowly it did.. I still fear that if I turn my back on it it will bite me though, out of vengeance or something for swearing at it

Edit: Ok.. after finer machine sanding it looks much better. Going to fill the biggest holes tomorrow I think. Wait and see..

This is about as good as it is gonna get. All the holes have been filled and the puzzle has been re-sanded and this time also fine sanded. That fine sanding was fun because as I was holding the puzzle quite tightly while rotating it around in sand paper two or three corners decided that their filling and cap should fall out.

So imagine sanding a puzzle and all of a sudden there is a gaping hole there. EEK! Where is that piece?? One instance led me to sweep the entire attic, finally locating the missing bugger behind a plastic bag LOL

Next is taking the puzzle apart yet again and then sanding the pieces one by one around the surface area to get rid of the sharp edges and then it is painting time again. I am no polisher, so.. I will resort to paint

Oh here is what it looks like now  Happy enough with the result, I might have to retract my earlier statement of never making another

 Aww thank you :D

Next week progress will slow down; end of holidays and back to work syndrome :(

Sanding the pieces individually now, pre-primer stages. They are quite sharp at the edges so blunting those down a little or one can cut oneself (especially the corners, they are like knives!).

Megaminx ball progress. Painting pieces about 1/3 of the way there. These are of a batch that has been done.

Now.. trying to take a picture of painted black pieces is hard. Getting some reflection to show in them is even harder. Trying to keep the dust off is hell on earth, especially when they get SO staticky that the cats would almost stick to them! GAH!

wipe..

wipe....

wipe......

wipe *groan* blip it, I am taking a picture and sharing it, they can have the dust hahaha

A new picture of the painting job, but now with all three kinds of pieces included. You can see how they look much better here. About half way now painting the entire thing. I better start thinking about the pattern that I want to sticker on this ball puzzle..

 Well.. I will not go higher than a gigaminx I am sure. They are quite expensive to use for modding, especially when you are just a beginner like I am I would recommend against it.

Unless of course you have the $$ to burn :)

Some pics are gritty, had to take them with 800iso due to the lighting. I just had to share this though :D

Smooooooth! Great work, do you use spray paint? If you do, how do you stop the paint from causing problems with the contact surfaces?

Yes I use spray paint. Please define more what you mean with problems with contact surfaces and such? Do you mean while painting? Or while turning?

Well.. as far as painting it is that I stand the pieces up straight using masking tape.

As for turning, I haven't seen problems on my 4x4x2 yet, so I guess it is a matter of drying proper and as last layers clear coat. Of course I haven't been modding long enough to truly give a verdict :)

Pretty! I can't wait to see it with stickers.

Without stickers it reminds me a bit of the inside of the Duominx I cast:

Keep up the good work.

Thank you!

Of course there ARE flaws, but I guess the maker will always be his/her worst critic. In my case that rings true haha

That's not a moon....

Consider getting a sticker set that makes it look like the Death Star!

Great mod. Well done.

Thank you!!

I am actually contemplating giving it the same sticker scheme as the new traiphum mass produced one, with two centers in one color. I loved that scheme on the hexaminx as well.

Still pondering though haha. I'll get a decision I am sure :)

Also.. it is quite hard to get a sticker set for this puzzle, it has to be hand made. The death star.. I would really need a sticker printer then hehe, considering how many times I adjusted the 4x4x2 template....

Edit: Uh oh.. just looking at "ball images" on google images.. oh dear I see lots of other fun ball stickering schemes :D

It's so beautyful !

I have to buy this kind of spray paint !!!!
For the stickers, I would advice this strange scheme I used on my own ball many years ago : Six colors scheme for a mosaic effect

What brand spray-paint you used? and did you paint it in one go?

Thank you! The puzzle you have Konrad is one of the oldies hahaha ;)

I use car spray paint, motip, both black and clear gloss. Multiple layers of course. You should hear me when one of the last layers goes orangy.. *mutter*

I best put an update here as well. ;) Currently the ball is almost done and these are a few stickering progress pictures. The stickers are not perfect, but this will do fine for hand cut stickers. :) I wish I had a sticker cutter haha. Sending them out elsewhere to be made and having them shipped back, for me, is not doable; I tend to change things around RIGHT before I put a sticker on even.

At this point in time a few of the trio corners need stickering still, and also all the duo corners need to be made. Hopefully tomorrow evening I can get the trios done, we'll see. I am not rushing this baby, that is for sure.

Thanks!! The finished one is in the new puzzles forum.

There is a 5x5 on the way, and also another mod with a megaminx, will fix the corners of that one with milliput(they were the old corners of this puzzle). I have a few ideas on what to make with it :)

Mind.. I will never surpass Traiphum, he is just wayyyyy too good :)
