Wanting to make sure everything worked as designed I threw it together strait out of the box and made a short video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcqRSB_osT8

This was inspired by Bram and his post in this thread:
http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=25940

On October 15th Adam Cowen shared these images with me:

And here is the designed puzzle:

This was all done when I made this post on October 27th:
http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=308138#p308138

And what I had spotted was this:
https://www.shapeways.com/model/1380183/bubble-pent-read-instructions.html

Turns out Oskar had uploaded this on September 20th. I would have called this the Bubblism532 puzzle. I had plans to make my own version of this and Oskar has given me the ok if I still want to but I wanted to start with the lower order versions (yes that is plural) first.

The Bubblism512 is the other puzzle in the shipment that I got today but I haven't put it together yet. Here is what it will look like.

Awesome! I really like your Bubbloid (now -ism) series! The top of the pentagonal prism looks like the sort of pattern you'd expect to see for representing a sun in a stained glass window.

The modulo-5ness of the puzzles should allow the edges to be flipped in place too which will add to the fun of the solve :D .

Carl! This looks stunning!
It has just reminded me that there are a few of your designs I need to add to my Shapeways wish list!

You didn't read the words between the pictures in my first post... did you? I've been guilty of that myself at times. ;)

What a beauty! :D :D
This reminds me that I have yet to cover your signature on my Bubbloid 122 (one of the most beautiful puzzles in my collection - very well tumbled by Brandon). :)

I believe I've just had a bubblegasm! :lol:
Those look very cool! That last one makes me wonder if you could add a face-cut in there like in Oskar's Dino-pent.

It almost looks mass produced! Such a beautiful cut style. These kinds of puzzles are my reason for living.

Correct... I had intended to state that in the video too.
Brandon Enright from YouTube wrote:
Very nice! That shape-shifting is pretty cool. I'm not sure it will have any affect on the solve difficulty though.
Agreed. Which was a point I did try to make in the video but I don't think I made it very well. I talk about it being the only jumbling puzzle I'm aware of with a unique property, in that it can be trivially restored to the proper shape regardless of how scrambled or jumbled the puzzle becomes. So while the puzzle jumbles, it can from a solving persepective be treated exactly as it would be treated if it were doctrinaire. In fact if the corners were spongy and the spacing between the edge pieces of different faces was allowed to vary during a twist then in principle this puzzle could be made doctrinaire. So I'm not sure what to make of that... does this puzzle blurr the destinction between jumbling and doctrinaire?

WOW!!! Thank you so much for all the kind words. Though I'm wondering if I should be worried about TheCubingKyle. ;)

I was able to get the Bubblism512 put together last night so I'll try to make a short video and get that uploaded tonight.

Yes... in principle you could. If you made that change to the Bubblism521 then you would split the core into two parts and all the outer edges in half. If you made that change to the Bubblism512 then again you would split the core into two parts and all the inner edges in half. Personally I think I like these better. They will turn better and neither has been done before so I didn't see the need to get more complex then necessary. As a designer I'm really coming to appreciate the KISS principle. That is short for "Keep It Simple Stupid".

By the way... the naming I proposed now allows some overlap.
Bubbloid122 = Bubblism421
Bubbloid112 = Bubblism412
You still need the name Bubbloid as you can't map the Bubbloid123 into a Bubblism using these naming convention.

And here is a funny story. I showed the Bubblism521 and Bubblism512 together to by two boys last night. My 15 year old said "But dad... ALL your puzzles have the exact same face on them. Doesn't that get a little boring after a while?" True enough... I now have 4 puzzles which all have faces which could make use of this sticker set:
Image
the Bubbloid122, Bubbloid112, Bubblism521, and Bubblism512. Boring? Never... I'm just glad he noticed and it makes me wonder. Are there any other desigers which have made 4 or more different puzzles which contain identical faces? Oskar probably has a dozen 3x3x3 variations which could use standard 3x3x3 sticker so I guess I'm certainly not the only one but I think its a short list.

Carl
