Dear puzzlers,

since a Hexaminx is a transformation of a dodecahedron into a cube shape I asked myself if somebody already created/invented a puzzle which transformed an isocahedron into a dodecahedron or even into a cubic form?
Does anybody know if a puzzle like this already exists? If not, do you think it is possible?

Best regards
Dr. Twist

Eitan's Radio Cube 3 is a face-turning icosahedron in a cubic shape.

Check the Museum

There's Eitan's Radio Cube 3, the Rex Dodecahedron, and the Pentagram as far as I remember; all shape transformations of face-turning icosahedral mechanisms.

I've cut into Eitan's Star, planning on making a cubic transformation. Haven't done much with it yet, though.

Correct!

That reminds me that I need an update:

Yes. Bauhinia is a vertex-turning dodecahedral transformation of a face-turning icosahedron. I solve it using the same algorithms I developed for the Radiolarian 3.

Here is a family portrait of a jumbling move applied identically to four related puzzles:

From left to right we have:
Eitan's Star - Face Turning Icosahedron
Bauhinia - Vertex Turning Dodecahedron
Radio Cube 3 - Edge and Vertex Turning Cube
Radiolarian 3 - Face Turning Icosahedron

I can't wait to see the results! That's going to be one MASSIVE Radio Cube 4.

Are you sure that straight cuts will work for cubic geometry? The radio cube 4 may need curved cuts.

On a related note, you could construct Eric Vergo's Pentagram puzzle from this.

Hello

thank you for response.
I didnt realise that the bauhina puzzle is a dodecahedral transformation of an isocahedron. Fascinating! Thanks for the illustrating "jumble-picture".
I´m looking forward to see the cubic form of Eitans star! Good luck :-)
It is really amazing how fast puzzles developing now! (comparing to earlier decades).
I´m sure we´ll see heaps of intresting new puzzles in the near future.

Perhaps Eitan could 'quickly' sketch/cut up a Radio Cube 4 for us? What would it look like?
