Here is yet another puzzle I have in the works. This one still has some work to be done, but I wasn't 100% sure if it had been done before? It's a deep cut face turning rhombic dodecahedron. The main problem is the size - I'm still not sure how big it's going to have to be - The pieces holding things down to the core are spaced fairly far apart, and are relatively small in comparison to everything else.

I also have designed the "starminx" version of this where the cuts go right into the vertexes - makes for a fairly simple puzzle really for it to have so much going on underneath, and also I've done a deeper cut version of this where the faces turn below the middle line. All things to be done someday if this works out!

I believe this puzzle is equivalent to BenPuzzle's Master Little Chop and Tanner Frisby's ETHAN puzzle.

Why is there a line in the middle of the rhombuses of the first image??

Yeah, that line is just a Solidworks anomaly, not a cut...

Also, I'm not sure if this is equivalent to those puzzles or not - This is face turning, and only allows 180 degree turns based on the geometry...

Shouldn't there be a jumbling move at 70.53 degrees? All FTRD's have it.

To be honest I'm not sure - I expected it to, but after looking at it, I think something was blocking it. It's possible though! It would also be nice if i could figure out how to get turns at the some of the vertices too - but those are also blocked by some of the internal pieces... Needs more research! :)

edit - Did some more research - yes, it will indeed jumble at the 70.53 degree mark!

This looks promising!
Now what you need to do is put holes in the center pieces and make a multi-rhombic dodecahedron 8-)

That would have so many holes and shells... Maybe you could share you mechanism with Jabeck so he could make it! :)

I think this has been made before. The closest thing I could find is this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdhXTkEfdM4

It's pretty old. The proportion of the pieces are not the same as the ones you visualized, but I'm pretty sure it is geometrically equivalent. I know this guy made other deeper cut FT rhombic dodecahedrons so you may want to look at some of those too.

This would be deeper than the Toru, adding new pieces. The new parts are the large triangles. That is if I'm seeing this right. Those triangles correspond to the visible parts on the 24 cube, which makes this a Master 24 Rhombic Dodecahedron.

I'd try a rails mech. Do it!

EDIT= Just saw and remembered that the Master Little Chop has been done, and was just offered on Shapeways in a recent thread. Compare and you can see they are equivalent. So I guess it has been done.

Yeah, very very similar to the Toru.. But I don't understand - isn't the master little chop cubic? Or are you saying it's mathematically equivalent?

They are mathematically equivalent. Kind of like how a 3x3x3 is to a trajbers octahedron

Oh ok - thanks. My main concern is just stepping on someone's toes if I put this on shapeways... Looks like from what I can see never been exactly done in this shape, so I'm going to proceed unless there are objections. I mean I still have to finish the puzzle, but I didn't want to put all that effort into it if it was already someone's puzzle... :)

Ha ha - yes i missed this message the first time! Thing is, I've only used a two shell mech - is the master little chop a three shell?

However, the spherical puzzle that makes up the inner shell - I am indeed making this into a stand-alone puzzle! It's basically a spherical rua I think...

The Master Little Chop uses 3 shells, however, it can be made with only 2 by making the inner puzzle equivalent to eitan's FTRD (which is equivalent to your inner shell). This way, there wouldn't need to be an intermittent shell in between.
I missed this message too for some reason :(

No problem - that's what I figured out too... I'm keeping this one two shell for costs and to make things easier. The inner puzzle is looking really cool too - I think I'm more excited about it than the outer puzzle!
