I should start by saying yes, I did search the forums first.
How would you set up a sketch for a cut on a vertex turning puzzle (dino cube for example)? Not the shape of the cut exactly, but where? I figure I would have to make a new plane but I can't figure out what to sketch the cut on. I'm very new to solidworks so maybe I should do something a little simpler than a vertex turning puzzle but oh well.
I guess it wouldn't hurt to say what I'm trying to make. It's going to be a dino pentagonal trapezohedron.

Start with a plane that goes through a corner, like so...


Then do the sketch on the plane (the example here is a Dino Cube)...


Pattern the surfaces...


Split it, and voilà, Dino Cube...


And here are the unique parts...

Thanks for the example. I was able to make a dino cube. I'm not exactly sure how to translate this to other shapes though. I have no idea if I'm sketching on the correct plane.

The plane only has to go through a corner, though in my example, it went through four.

I'm not exactly sure what you were trying to make in your example -- if it was a vertex turning puzzle then you did it correctly.

I suggest learning how to 3D sketch. It's difficult on occasion, but is often very useful for creating axis and sketch planes for puzzles that aren't face-turning.

It is a vertex turning puzzle. I have the sketch made and I think it's all good now. Thanks for the help and I'll be certain to look into 3D sketching
Edit: Welp, back to the drawing board. Everything worked except the sketch. I think I'll stick to something a little simpler for now.
