Before I dye a few puzzles, I would like to know if i can dye FDM plastic from a prototype machine? I want to make sure that the hot/near boiling water will not deform the plastic.

If you have any tips on temperature and dyeing time please let me know as I have never dyed a puzzle before.

I do realize that there is probably a topic somewhere here on tp.com but I just need a few simple answers.

Thanks All

Chris

No, you can't. I tried but you can't get more than a light gray.

Thanks Tom,

Will the plastic deform any from the water temp?

Secondly, why will the dye not take?

The plastic doesn't absorb enough it's too waterproof... I think

There are more than one way to go when dying!

a video (this one is about polycarbonate plastic) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nanowe1t ... re=related

You use acetone instead of hot water. and it doesn't take very long time

you can allways paint it

I did that with my 1x3x4, and so far it hasn't rubbed off.

What about ABS plastic? Will it be the same technique or is it something else? :|

PS: I died THREE puzzles from FDM midnight black by using one bottle of RIT dye.

Chris

I have proof mine worked. I dyed two puzzles in RIT from FDM. Water must be boiling. Use 1 bottle of Rit dye in a smaller pot. Have a high molar concentration of Rit dye.
