As I often do, I had taken apart a mini pyramorphix (meffert) some time ago after seeing a screw through one little crack and just recently taken apart an orig 2x2x2 to find 2 completely different and interesting mechs. The pyramorph had a ball and groove mech while the 2x2x2 had a spindle type mech. Are there any 2x2x2's with a ball type mech? Are there any other mech versions that I've missed? I can see the pros and cons of each mech but am interested in the groups opinions as far as using the mechs as a base for molding other puzzles...
take care, _pink

The two mechanisms you mention are the most common, but I have yet to see the mechanism inside the Eastsheen 2x2x2. I suspect it will be a variation of the spindle mechanism.
There is also the K8 ball 2x2x2 mechanism. I have one of those sitting in the trunk of my car now but I have no wish to take it apart to look inside at the moment. It turns very smoothly unlike the Pyramorphix or Rubik's Pocket Cube.

I took one of the Kellogs Star Wars 2x2 heads apart and it has a ball mechanism. If I get around to it, I'll post a picture.

The eastsheen 2x2x2 mech is actually a bona fide 3x3x3, only with 3 edges, 3 centers and 1 corner stuck together. The outer corners are held in place by a simple extension.
