Here is the new puzzle that I have made : src=http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/files2/rhombicdodecaedre213-36-70-98!2-9-2003!9-30-02!AM.jpg>src=http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/files2/rhombicdodecaedre-1213-36-70-98!2-9-2003!9-30-29!AM.jpg> ![]() I don't know if anyone has already made it. It appear hard to solve.

Here's the pic It's not one I've seen before. It looks great, well done. How does it twist? Do the 4 pieces turn around a corner, like a Dino cube? Or is it dihedral, so each edge is 2 pieces? What is it based on a 3x3x3, a Megaminx, a skewb....? Can we see pics of it mid twist? Congrats again!! Max

That would be 3 pieces turn around a corner! Can't count.

It looks very nice! But your are not the first that made a Rhombic Dodecahedron from a 2x2x2 (Tony Fisher 2001) but he made it in an other angl Since it is a 2x2x2 it is not hard to solve (12 - 18 sec) Did you made the build up from milliput? You made a typo so here is the picture

NO it can not be a 2x2x2, I could be build from a 4x4x4 (centers only)

This Rhombic dodecaedron could be made from a 4x4x4 I will make a try this build this variation

Would be easier and cheaper to build with a 2x2 extended like for the 2x2x4 but on all six faces!!
Would just need 4 2x2x2s or one and moulded pieces for the extensions.

Indead it is possible with a 2x2x2, but on a 4x4x4 you can cut the edges and corners, it will not be that bigger as a 4x4x4. The advantage is that it will be stable. Only a big 2x2x2 is stable enough for extension on all faces. So both are possible.
But I have two version in mind for a Rhombic dodecaedron with a 4x4x4 as kernel!

So that would be a very nice Rainbow cube extension then?

I will try and make it this way. Woul be quite large though, like 4x4x4 but with 2x2x2 cubies.

It is buit with a core of a big 2x2x2. But I think it would be interresting that built a 4x4x4 in the shape of a rhombic dodecaedron.

If you use a 4x4x4, you would have to build up the centres. This would make slices different thickness. If you didn't build up you would have to remove the 4x4x4 edges and corners.

I cut the corners and edges, this will make the slices about the same size.

Laurent,
First of all my congratulations on yet another very nice puzzle. There is one thing not entirely clear to me. The puzzle shown by Ton (with the sketch on how to make it from a 444) shows 8 pieces which each 3 (larger) triangular stickers. These 8 pieces correspond with the 8 pieces of a 2*2*2. The new puzzle has twice as many (48) smaller triangular stickers. From looking at the puzle in the mixed-up state, apparently all these 48 stickers can be rotated (mixed)independently. Is that correct? If so, how can this be realised with an 8piece 2*2*2 as a basis?
Geert.

To answer Geert.... I would say this puzzle is a shaved working hexcross puzzle. That is, just like the 2x2x4, but extending in all directions, then shaving down the extensions to triangles.
This would be using the standard recent 2x2x4 techniques.

This is what I first said, but I have had a proper look now and think Ton may have a very valid point about stability. After drilling and grinding all 3 external faces of a Rubiks 2x2 cubie there isn't that much left! I think you would need to add some support inside the cubie, may be some poured resin would do it. The cubies will hold onto the kernel but they would easily come off, especially when you think about the forces applied when twisting the extensions.
Might still give it a go though.

Very easy, this one was just adapted from the MathWorld site. LiveGraphics3D is the applet, you will find it on the web if you search. You do need Mathematica to generate the graphics files but you can edit existing ones with a text editor (like i did here) or you could write your own by hand but this would take a while!
Have a look in you temp directory the files you need are live.jar and the graphics file rhom2x2.m and view the source of the post to see how to call it. Piece of cake.
You can also animate, I have been using it to visualie how different custom puzzles twist etc. If you have Rhino3D (or 3D Studio Max I think) it will export to Mathematica and then you can export the required Graphics3D *.m file.

You can obviously do it with the eastsheen 2x2, I just dont think a rubiks one would hold up. I wanted to use a rubik to keep the size down.

I doubt it can be done with an east sheen cube at all. The internals are very complex and take up a lot of room. You can use a rubik's 2x2x2 because of the space inside.

When Laurent said a big 2x2 I was thinking EastSheen, but yep probably a super rubik. Laurent?
