I know I have come across this question somewhere on this forum before, but I do not remember the answer and after searching, I still have not been able to find where I saw it.

I would like to know if I should leave a gap between the layers of a puzzle and if so, how big? I am going to do a 3d print first, but I would like answers for injection molding and compression molding as well, as I may use them in the future.

I am sorry I could not find where I saw this. I feel like a drag on the forum asking questions, but never putting any useful information out there myself...

Couldn't find, or couldn't be bothered?

Just teasing, often it all depends on the choice of keywords.

How did you come up with the ideal keyword "tolerence"?
STUNNING!

I just flipped open the dictionary at a random page, and it was the first word I saw.

I remember when I got my first dictionary (which I still have: the battery life is fantastic but the search function sucks) and whichever word I looked up I always ended up finding swear words.

Strange, my dictionary doesn't know it. Seems to be not so tolerant and allows tolerance only

It depends on where you're talking about placing the gap. For SLS (and probably other materials) you don't want any tolerances added for pieces side-by-side.

See Eric's excellent post for why. Not adding tolerances to the wrong faces is actually really important. If you do tolerance faces that shouldn't be, you can end up with a very loose puzzle that catches a lot.

What about tolerances on fudged designs? Something tells me NO tolerances for fudged designs? But I don't know.

On that slide, can you explain the difference between "jam" and "slide"?

Great set of slides. I don't suppose there is any comparable description of the rails mechanism?

Jam: one pieces sliding in a rail inside another. If you do not include a gap, then the piece jams.
Slide: if a piece is kept by two other pieces, then the play between those pieces will enable your piece to slide.
