I have an old 4x4 I'm using as an AI cube with the help of some tape but I was thinking of attempting this mod with it soon. Do keep us updated on what parts were difficult or how you wish you'd done it? :)

Will do. First I did do was tape the puzzle on the two top and bottom layers, with duc tape, and then cut through the tape to make the pairs. The advantage of this is that the pieces that need to be glued will stay together PLUS that you will not have difficulty matching them up proper, as the tape is taking care of this. :)

Will you be sanding this down or just gluing the pieces to make it a cubic 4x4x2?

It will be sanded down. Cubic is nice, but I want to test my skills a bit more. :)

Managed to pry myself out of my computer game for a bit (for the curious: Skyrim) to work on the 4x4x2.

Here is where I am at today. :D

Edit:
Sanding done! It looks like this on both sides now. Did lots of double turns on different layers to even things out as much as I can. I am not going down any further than this, if I do then I fear the center point of the centers will get too thin. I could of course make the screw show, but I like the looks better this way.

Next is filling the pieces and then I will be sanding things yet again. :) But that is for another day.

Finally I pried myself away long enough from gaming to work on the 4x4x2 puzzle a bit more. This time I filled the holes on the inside of the puzzle. These you would normally not even see, but considering the puzzle will start shapeshifting it is nicer to have the holes all filled up so you don't see them.

Quite a tedious job, and boring. But once this is dry I can start working on the outside filling, the actual visible side of the puzzle!

Finally got around to filling the outside parts. Next after they are all dry is sanding the parts individually on the sides and such so I can reassemble the puzzle and then all of this will be sanded down again. And repeated in a less drastic fashion, if need be.

1) yellow and black milliput, since I had to use up what I had left and considering the puzzle will be painted anyway *shrug*
2) I didn't know that red tipped screwdriver was that crooked

I can't wait to see the final product. I couldn't dedicate myself to that much work, I would just keep it cubic for simplicity.

Well.. I do like modifying puzzles, and I wanted a pillowed version of this.. heh. And it is good practice for the 5x5 I have laying around, and if THAT decides to be nice to me I will venture into higher orders. :)

An update on the pieces of the 4x4x2 that I am making. I just finished sanding their sides and I can start putting the puzzle back together. Here are the pieces as they look at this point in time.

There are small areas that still need filling that I can see, but first I want to put it together and sand it to shape so I can see where the filling work is needed. Very curious to see what this baby looks like assembled and unsanded. I hope it still fits together to begin with!

After a bit of a mishap with an inner piece (the entire core flew out of my hands and over my desk, I could retrieve it but one big inner piece went missing, found it later on top of one of the plugs GRRRR) I managed to reassemble the thing. You can see that a lot of sanding down is required again. :)

Thanks!

Well.. the Dremel did help me out a little.. though in some areas a bit too much *hrmph, should have started on the sandpaper earlier*.

Ah well.. nothing that cannot be filled back up hehe.

The 4x4x2 pieces are being sanded with 600 grit and polished after that, there are these pinprick holes and imperfections still there, but I have decided to buy ground paint for the first time which should hopefully fill these little things.

I can fill the things with milliput till I see blue in the face. I am anal, but I am NOT a perfectionist hehe (at least, I TRY not to be, it is taking some effort to not keep filling!).

Those pieces are hopeless, they cannot be recovered, just throw them away and start again!

Seriously, just keep filling and polishing, with a few year's work you will be up to Traiphum's standards :D They are actually looking good now, better than I can do.

I doubt anyone can live up to Traiphum's work quality, his work is as if mass produced!

Slow progress, but progress is progress, and enjoying my holiday as well now haha.

I found filler spray for a normal price, yay! It fills up the scratches really nicely, and the little holes as well, somewhat. After that I started doing some wet sanding for the first time in my life.. loving it! :D

Kattenvrienden I've seen you do a number of mods since I joined the site. I've been doing some very very simple mods involving mostly just straight cuts and then sanding. What do you think is a good mod to start improving my abilities? Is the 4x4x2 a good start?

I would say go for it!

You may break something, but that is ok and how we learn. I started out modding cubes by gluing them and making different shapes. Getting used to milliput as I went because things needed filling up. The first true reshape I did was with the corners of the evil mask cube, that took some work alright hahah.

But do it.. get some cheapo 4x4s and just start, see where things go :)

Thank you! The little holes still bug me, but oh well.. they will stay where they are and will serve as a reminder to fill better next time ;) Or rather: pay more attention TO the filling next time :)

Here is a picture of their current state. Not done at all yet, needs more careful sanding and painting, but I wanted to show an in between progress picture :)

Just an update on the pieces, they are now done. All they have to do is dry, and I have to clean the innards and then I can reassemble the puzzle and hopefully it will still work ;)

I have no idea.. if I were to count the amount of hours that went in it, way too much

If I were to sell it it would go on ebay.

There is more work in this than in any of the puzzles I have ever made, that is for sure, best quality yet :)

It is currently all resting in a basket still, in pieces. Taking my time to let it dry out well, the stickers have been ordered (these colors: http://cubesmith.com/3x3hfbrtwbrtbl.jpg in sheets of course).

The innards were YUCKY haha, that is what happens when you start cutting and sanding puzzles, but I have taken it all apart of course and washed those pieces, even took apart and lubed the entire core :)

It's been a number of days, the paint has hardened out enough to start assembling. One small chip that occurred though, but that was there when I applied the last layer of paint, and I figured "stuff it" ;)

It is hard to take pictures of a black puzzle, but you can see something at least :D

Black IS beautiful indeed! :D
The quality is the best so far. Just a wee bit of oranging in the black below the clear, ah well.. stickers will cover most of that :)
As it happens the bright stickers were just mailed to me yesterday just after I started assembling I got the email in!

Thanks guys

New puzzles? But it isn't a new puzzle is it? I mean Triaphum has made it before I even thought of it :)

It has in the past been acceptable to put fully completed projects in New Puzzles (not the building log, however) even if you weren't the first, e.g. DLitwin's build of PuzzleMaster42's v1 Gigaminx. But one is not required to.

So... Did you sticker this beauty yet? Or are you still waiting for stickers? Looks very professional, it's very obvious all of the work and finetuning that has been done! Awesome 8-)

Still waiting for the stickers, but I am sure they will come in sometime in the upcoming week. I haven't made a sticker mold yet, I wanted to give the paint the chance to harden out as much as it can before I start with that :)
