Post subject: OLL AlgsPosted: Thu Feb 01, 2007 4:32 pm

Instead of just learning from a list, I am thinking of trying to work out some OLLs.

I worked out my F2L algs, but OLL is a whole different matter.

Does anyone have any tips as to how to approach working these out?

Yeah, I've worked out some of my own OLL algs. The way I have been doing it is by coming up with different ways of moving around c-e pairs and then resticking them into their slots. Then you write down what moves you performed, and do the inverse of those moves on your cube to see which OLL case the "algorithm" you just came up with solves.

An easy example is to just take out a c-e pair with an R move, then move it around while doing more R and U moves and then finally placing it back in. This is how you get the Sune. You take out the c-e pair with R, move it over twice (U2), and then "shake things up a bit" on the top layer by doing R' U'. Then you re-insert the corner edge pair with R U' R'.

Another easy example is the T-orient. Mess around with the top layer by doing: (R U R') (U') (R' F R F'). I broke the thought process of these moves into three steps: take out the corner edge pair, move it over, reinserting differently than you took it out.

Basically you're just messing around with the top layer (using moves that are finger-trick friendly), and going backwards to see what OLL case your made-up algorithm solves.

If you want I can give other examples that I have seen from others or thought of myself.

What is a good "list" taht i can learn OLL from, because I learn easily that way (reading it and doing it over and over) kas I need to finish learning PLL algorithms and I need to start learning OLL algorithms!

Joel van Noort's web page has a good OLL tutorial:
http://www.math.leidenuniv.nl/~jnoort/i ... cation=OLL

If you want Yu Jeong-Min's algorithms (he uses mostly R/U and a lot of double-layer turns) I have an Excel file of that, so just ask.

I would be quite interested in that, shall I PM my email?

I'll just post a link to it.

It's up on my website at http://www.mzrg.com/filepost/Gungz_OLL.xls...

Hey Pembo, i'm using the ones are cubewhiz.com, they seem to be working out nicely for me. Also, use algs that you already know and learn what case it is: such as forming a cross when you don't know the case. F R U R' U' F' is a nice OLL to get, it is when there is a "T" on the top face. Just little stuff like that has dropped my times.

I already know a 3LLL which involves cross then corners then PLL.....

.... i think we are confusing each other, because i dunno what the heck you are talking about

i just got back to learning OLL... i can do the algs, but recognition is HORRIBLE.

the point i was trying to make is that you should just look at algs you already know, they might help you out later on.

Eh? The only algs I use for OLLs are OLLs I know...

I think what he may be saying is if you use FRUR'U'F' to flip two opposite edges. Learn which pattern that is. (It happens to look like a T) Now you can hold the T with the top of the T on the right, or the top of the T on the left. Which is correct for your alg?

Doing a whole cube 180 and your edge OLL alg is much faster than doing your edge OLL then your corner OLL.

(* there are two different T patterns only one of them is solves OLL with the alg listed)
