How do I get it into a ball in under 20 seconds? Under 10? Under 5? Under 2?

Johannes, do you mind if I copy what you do in your 2.57 video? Is that still your fastest strategy?

Hey... I just started speed-snaking like yesterday and my best time is 0:11.69 and I (like you) don't really understand how you can possibly do it in like 2 seconds, so please let me know if you find out!

Is it possible to disassemble one of these? I took off one of the small stickers covering the extra hole on each end and saw that is is some sort of screw washer spring structure holding each piece together, so does anyone know a way to safely get this thing apart?

Why would you want to dissambal it? If you wanted to lube it you could just
spray the silicone in the cracks (that if you are using silicone spray) and
if you anted to adjust the tention you don't need to dissambal it.

Practice. 8-) You should get under 5 in a few days or a week, depends on how much you practise.

Feel free to copy it. That video was a year ago, nowadays I do the last moves more efficiently. But I got at least a 1.91 that way so it's not bad.

ya you can disasemble them. Notice how the plates on top or bottom have a seam. I am looking right now at my blue and white twist, sovled, with white center thingys, white panels and blue trim. The white panels should come out with some work.

In the eighties a lot of cheap ones were sold (usually green and white), and these simply had a single piece of fishing line running through it. When that broke, the whole snake would fall to pieces.

EDIT: I just got a 9.97  which is my first sub-10.

The video I'm talking about is on strangepuzzle.com, in the snake section.

You can get them off eBay or from rubiks.com / a large retailer (they're called "Twist" now).

Excellent advice. Some people should remember this applies to any puzzle.

What is the internal mech look like? If they are rivits they shouldn't break
unless you left it in the sun for a long time (like a week).

Not any good ones. And nowadays it takes me >0.5 seconds to put the Snake down so that it remains solved, it's getting way too loose... I should maybe start breaking in a new one, but I'm too lazy and I concentrate on cubing. I can still get some sub-2.2 solves, though.

qqwref wrote:

Congrats! I was really excited when I got my first sub-15. :)

Ok, if you really want to take it literally, it could mean sub-5 minutes for 3x3x3. The idea applies to any puzzle.

My giant snake broke easily, but the regular ones are good.

the ball just popped out of the hole. if i could push it in that'd be easy but the ball and hole drop into the plastic pieces so you can't re-connect them

Yay! It's getting more popular finally. I used to practice this a lot. Almost took the unofficial average record (best average of 2.65). I stopped practicing because I wanted Johannes to remain number 1 (Of course most people won't believe me). Plus I'll never go to any puzzle competitions so there would be no reason to go further than second.

Some tips that might not have been mentioned:

1. Lube (IMO, don't do this until the snake is loose and until you can control it)
2. Try to feel the snake as a rope. Like that motion you do with a rope to make the waves.
3. Practice making and memorizing the motions to other shapes (Johannes' idea)

I paid $13 for mine (the blue and white Rubik's Twist at rubiks.com) and it hasn't broke or chipped, very durable. Actually they kind of make a DIY snake. It's on the Rubik site. The last time I saw it, it was at the bottom of the store page. It's a bag of snap together pieces and you can keep buying more to add to it I think.

Snap together pieces? That's cool... I want to make a double-length snake.

I just got a 5.35. I'm getting better. Sub-5 is within reach.

I've meant to get one multiple times. If I see one in a store layin' there (which I doubt will happen), then I'll get it.

Slightly improved my method... then got a surprise 4.48. The Snake was not completely pushed together into a ball (first/last tiles had about a quarter inch of space between them) but I'm improving.

I lubed my Snake a while ago and it seemed to work just fine. It makes the Snake really smooth and loose, which worked out perfectly for me. Also, since Snake doesn't have any stickers, you don't have to worry about that when lubing it.

Kinda the same for me, only I'm not planning on getting one soon.

I just think, somewhere down the road when I get another puzzle, it'll be a snake.

I have some money saved up, but when you get it all from working multiple hours at some crappy fast food place, it makes you want to only spend money when you have to.

Even if you get some puzzles every once in a while, there are still people to be jealous of! I can spend $30 on a puzzle, but not $1000... so no Gigaminx, Golden Cube, Puckube, etc.

Lol... Update... my times are around 7 seconds now but I don't practice much... i have had mine for like a month and it is still in amazing shape... I haven't had any problems with the cord, or panels falling off and whatnot, so I guess mine is ok... I gues my lack of practice = my lack of skill but, I devote most of teh time I spend on puzzles other than the 3x3x3 to my Magic... oh sweet sweet Magic.... lol
