First of all you need a good Megaminx. I use the beautiful tiled Meffert one. Sadly they have too strong and long springs which make the puzzle very stiff and can sometimes even drive out the screw and center piece during normal play. I replaced the original springs with shorter and softer ones with ends ground flat and also added some washers to adjust the tension (I have about six washers in each center). First I stole the springs from two cheap 3x3 clones, later I ordered some from a spring manufacturer. Oh, and of course you should also lubricate your megaminx.

He notes he uses different springs, the normal ones are way to tight, well, first of all, cant you just loosen the screw? therefor making it looser?

and if not, would 2 spring kits from Omega Studio custom rubik's cube online shop suffice?

You'd probably have to add some washers or something equivalent to make up for the shorter spring length. I have about six washers in each of my centers.

speaking of such, meffert's is currently out of stock of megaminx. does anyone know where I can get one of equivalent quality, or when they will be back in stock?

I emailed uwe a short while after they ran out of Megaminxs and he said items like the MM and the Ultimate Skewb would be in stock sometime next year. he didn't specify a date. I was hoping he'd have a new batch by xmas. ;_;

Actually, there are quite a few puzzles at mefferts that have been out of stock for a while. The Ultimate Skewb for instance has been out of stock since summer iirc. Maybe he's waiting for demand to get higher before he calls the factory to pump out new ones...?

btw, I too am looking to buy a new megaminx. And since mefferts was out I looked around ebay and found this

Anyone know if it's a good deal? Seller says it's already silicone lubricated but not meant for speedcubing (even Meffert megaminx isn't meant for speedcubing without adjustments)

its one of those knock off megaminxes. it doesnt turn like a mefferts one.
