Well, they work, up to a point. You can create 0 and 1 faces just fine, however you can't make 3 adjacent 0 faces, the way the shapeways pieces attach to the core, they are in the way of each other, you can fit 4 pieces, but they all have to be to pairs which are opposite to be able to fit.
However it's still not as interesting as I was imagining, but that is to a large extent down to my own stupidity
It's obvious when you think about it, but in shape-shifted form, you don't get the bandaging that you get on the regular cuboid series puzzles., because the baby-face pieces and the inner circle pieces still form complete circles when mixed, and can therefore still turn.
You could of course try to make sure you only turn them as if they were bandaged, which is what I did, only turning a baby face if it was complete, but that is easier said than done, it is very easy to turn them accidentally, especially with the somewhat poor turning quality of these coloured plastic versions.
