 Post subject: Orient Corners using two faces

Is anyone aware of a way to orient (2 or 3) corners by turning only two faces?

No problem if there are 3 faces to play with, but 2 only?

A combination of sunes (R U R' U R U2 R') and antisunes (R U2 R' U' R U' R') should do the trick. With those two algorithms alone you can make all the corner OLL states.

Thanks Luke. I know about sune and antisune, but haven't used them much. I notice they also move edges. Perhaps I should have been more specific by saying that I'd like them oriented without disturbing edges. Is that possible?

(I have tried combinations of sunes and U turns and antisunes, but it hasn't worked so far.)

Well you could always use two-gen three cycles to permute the edges back into the places you want them. I use R2 U R U R' U' R' U' R' U R' and its inverse to do edge cycles.

As for corner orientation, I made a tutorial here for all the PLL situations and how to use the sunes and antisunes to solve them. Hopefully this will help.

Thanks again Luke for this resource. It's all pretty interesting to me as I've never once got into speedsolving and so not really had a need for these types of sequences.

That is if one wanted to do an edge three cycle. With the setup move being U2, it results in two corners being reorientated, and everything else is preserved.

I came up with a method recently that uses the basic RU'R'U (is there a proper name for that sequence?)
By moving the 3 R edges that aren't on the U layer into the effected edge positions in RU'R'U with RUR, you get:
RUR
RU'R'U
R'U'R'
(hmm, this looks kind of like sune...)

which gets you two oriented corners on U with all U edges intact, so then just use that as the first part of a permutator on U to get 3 or for corner orients:
RUR
RU'R'U
R'U'R'
U -permutation (or U2 for 4 corner orient), then do the reverse:
RUR
U'RUR'
R'U'R'
U'
which orients all the U corners except the FL

you can use that entire thing as a permutator on U to get a 2 corner orient. I hope I am using the words permutator and permutation right.
