Post subject: Gigaminx corner parity issues? Posted: Thu Jul 21, 2011 7:07 pm |

Every time I try to solve this gigaminx, I end up having two corner pieces on the last layer that are oriented wrong, and after I try to use the R'D'RD to orient them, the edges that that algorithm mess up and which are supposed to fix themselves after I orient the wrong corner, don't fix themselves. So I can't figure out how to solve this thing... I recently took this gigaminx apart to attempt to sand and lube it (which was spectacularly ineffective, btw. Sigh.), and reassembled it in a solved state. Did I mess up when I was reassembling the gigaminx, or is there a parity issue with two corners that can happen on the gigaminx but not the megaminx, which I am unaware of? Am I just going to have to reassemble it again?
Thanks.

So, this may have been exactly what you were doing (and it probably was, since you can solve the megaminx), but I wasn't quite sure, just based on how the post was worded.
Hold the corner that needs to be oriented in the Front-Top-Right, position.
Use R' D' R D and repeat until that corner is properly oriented. If there is more than one corner that needs to be oriented, the edges won't actually have fixed themselves yet.
Rotate the top face so that the next corner that needs to be oriented is in the Front-Top-Right posiktion, and use that algorithm again to orient it.
If you repeat this until all of the corners are oriented properly, the edges should then be solved. If they aren't....something odd is afoot, since as far as I know there's no parity like that on the gigaminx.

That is what I was doing, yes. If there's no such parity problem on the gigaminx then I guess I must have messed up when I was putting it back together.
Thanks.

Haha, you're welcome. I somehow ended up having one corner oriented wrong on mine, after a rush reconstruction from a disastrous pop.
