I've some strange things going on with my computer. Here's one of them.

If I go to certain websites (not this one) like ebay or MSN, and I move the scroll bar on the left something starts downloading things related to hitbox, advertyz, casinos, and other comercial junk.

If I don't hit "stop" twice, I shortly get the message that I'm "running low on resources" and then I get a blue screen and can't get the thing running normally again, and have to reboot. If I hit "stop" at the wrong time, the computer freezes up and restarting the system eats files I have open. This part seems to be tied to a problem I have with quicktime.

I have tried multiple spyware/adware programs - spyhunter, spybot, adaware, and they can't find whatever this is.

I complained to advertyz and I got an insulting email back.

I'd appreciate help with this,

check for suspicious software in Add/Remove Programs.

There is a program called "Hijack This" Run it and it should give you a list of everything running in the background and what they do. Simply check the stuff you don't want running. Be careful though because you can actually remove stuff that should be running in the background. If you'd like, send a list of what's running, and I can go through it and let you know which things are not needed. I would imagine other people here could probably do that too.

Also, what browser are you using?
IE likes to get bars added to the top when you don't want them.

These dirtbag companies never give up. I've had adware blast it's way into my pc and set up camp. Some can be a real pain to remove.

I removed one from my friends pc that was actually disguised as an adware remover. You have to be really careful what you dl.

I really haven't had any trouble since I went to Firefox a year or 2 ago. That may or may not change in the near future though.

Firefox is my main browser.

When the problem first showed up it would occur with the regular Mozilla browser that compuserve uses. I then switched to IE and when it showed up there I went to Firefox, maybe seven months after it came out. The problem didn't crop up for a while, but now it happens all the time with Firefox.

it is because of your temp internet files. delete all cookies and set your cache MB to 0 and do not keep history. only save passwords. delete all temporary internet files then run hijackthis and make sure they are all gone. also it could be the blackworm, and you have to reformat.

I just went to ebay and did what usually triggers the problem and it didn't trigger.

"Hijack This" seems to have done the trick. It found, among useful bits, 8 or 9 little things including three from about.com. I recall that's where I was when this crap started.

No problem. HiJack This has helped me fix a bunch of computers when virus and ad/spyware scanners have failed.

I also use Hijack this for work. it is a great tool. i have it on my USB memory stick. i use it about once a week on various computers.

how does Hijack This compare to AdAware?

Just wondering if i should start using Hijack This, but i've been using Adaware for several years now.

Hijack This requires more direct user action than Adaware does. I wouldn't really categorize them as competing products, more like complementary tools for eliminating malware.

just installed it... i see it catches alot, but yes, if you don't know the exact file you're deleting you may be doing worse than good. ugh. now i really have to looksee and know what's being flagged.

anyone have any bad experiences with deleting a file by accident?

*raises hand* before I knew about how deleting files randomly can ruin a computer. The first time I used a program like this I ended up making some of my games unusuable, and auto execute never worked anymore but that was a while ago.

well, i'm happy i know how to at least reformat a cpu. i'm pretty good at what sites i go to and i run a decent firewall. that has it's own anti-spyware software as well. so i run both at times.

i've dealt with regestries before. you remember 'gator' awhile ago?! ugh, that was a pain in the arse lol....
