For the last 16 years geologists have been waiting for a quake in Parkfield, California, because of the regularity of earthqualkes there, roughly every 22 years since 1857. They have an incredible array of instruments for measuring there and it finally happened.

I live in SB and I felt the first one half an hour ago (5.9) and there have been 28 quakes since then.

I was watching the news when it happened. The people in the news studio in Frisco felt it, but I'm across the bay in Emeryville and I didn't feel a thing. This is the third quake since I moved here and I haven't felt one of them. Hopefully when I do, it wont be like the Loma Preita quake in '88.

Since we are on the topic of Quakes. I have heard that Mt. St. Helens is having several swarms of earthquakes. They say it is unlikely that it will blow again, but there is some seismic activity. The largest being 2.8

For those who are interested:

9/28/2004 10:15:24 AM Pacific Daylight Time a 6.0 quake near Parkfield, CA followed by a 5.0 and 4.7 within 10 mnutes.
69 quakes in an hour,
47 second hour including a 4.0 12:31!
27 third hour
31 fourth hour
20 fifth hour
203 aftershocks by 4:57 PM PDT

There was a 3.1 near Calexico and Mexicali, just south of the US/Mexican border about 3 PM, part of a flurry of quakes on the southern part of the Southern Cal San Andreas fault system and there is an ongoing flurry near the Nevada border by Big Bear. There's an ancient caldera in that area. Busy day.

Some people here, in other parts of town, felt it for 30 seconds.
