Ok ya'll don't laugh. I'm watching my first ever football match. In the south of the Netherlands in a bar full of locals. I've not a clue what is going on and poor Hendrik is having to explain.

But the people watching is good fun! Orange everywhere.

21:44 Goal for the Netherlands!!!
1:1
There must be a hell of noise in that local bar.

BTW, Spain has won the last final in 2010 against the Netherlands.

It was pretty loud. Like I said. Fun watching the people.
I've just learned about yellow cards and offside. This is just too funny.

AND NOT A WORD TONY! I'm not converting. This is still a no football zone.

I'll admit that I loved the play on that last goal. It was fantastic.

(And don't anyone remind me I started a football post)

Come on guys. This is hardly in the spirit of the game. Football isn't about Europeans attacking Americans. It's about Europeans attacking Europeans.

There are four things wrong with this picture:
1) The right picture points to an elbow and says, "Hand."
2) What do you call rugby? Handbiggeregg?
3) The picture says, "american football has found it's name." "It's" means it is, not the possessive of "it."
4) It says that american football has found its name, but it names american football as "american football." It already has a name.

Anyways, back to puzzle designing for me. :D
(I play neither football nor football. I only watch football during the world cup, but I watch football almost the entire season)

*sigh* Every World Cup ... :)
It's called "football" not because you kick a ball with your feet, but because it's played on foot. Versus being played on horseback.
So every ball game without horses is a kind of football.
It's actually called "Association Football", but the word "association" was mangled over time into "Soccer".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_for_ ... n_football

There ... I feel better now :-D

European football is association football or soccer. American football is gridiron football.

Actually in the spirit of toughness, gridiron would make an awesome new name for the American sport.

Association Football is just the name given to an partnership, alliance or confederation of clubs which grouped together to form the Football League around 1863. They got together to define the rules of the modern game, with the single most defining feature being that the ball was generally moved around the field of play by the foot. Thus FOOT-BALL. Although it is true that the term Soccer originated in the late 19th century, by the shortening and alteration of the words Association Football. So really, American Football, by the same logic, should be called Mericer. It should never be called Football. Never ever ever. Ever. [/rant]

I would like to see some tigers on the pitch like in gladiator times, will help to liven up the game little. And a land mine or two.

Although I tend to agree, in reality you (and I) are only saying that because we are not Americans. The world is full of people arguing in defence of things that are based purely on the country they are born in or the religion of our parents. If there was any intelligence in the world, beliefs would be unconnected to one's own country and upbringing. Sadly few of us are able to truly think for ourselves (myself included).

Losing so badly like that was just their strategy to lull you into a false sense of security - in the final they will obliterate holland (again).

Congratulation for the victory over Spain! My girlfriend is a fan of the Netherlands football team only because she likes Arjen Robben for the reason that he looks handsome, and I am always saying that her aesthetical standard is a bit weird. Whatever, I support the Netherlands too for its attacking style football, though not as good as ten years ago when Robben still had hair.

The whole of HOLLAND -oh, sorry, The Netherlands  - is turning orange (until the Dutch team (Diets cluppie) looses a voetbal/football/soccer match...)

Even the puzzles (to stay on topic for the forum  ) turn orange...

Have a nice World Cup event,

Hahaha I got confused.. the match that the NL had was Friday, the day of my arrival, not the MPP day, but still.. we had a blast with dinner and the pub, I saw the match was on, couldn't care less.. the company was better :D Hope to meet up with you sometime as well! It'll happen, I'm sure :)

I don't agree. The Netherlands have never played better than in 1988, when Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten ruled the game

That was a really nice period!
I like football games with pretty actions, but it's best when those are also effective. And there it often lacks...

I only know it because I asked a Dutch friend many years ago about whether it was ok to call The Netherlands Holland. They said although not technically correct it was fine and much used by the Dutch themselves. See the Dutchman's shirt in Rox's photo- https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... =1&theater . No part of the Netherlands is called Holland (there's a North Holland and South Holland) so there is no confusion what is meant (yes I know there are islands and stuff owned by Netherlands). The UK, England and Great Britain however are different. I am happy to use all of them though (correctly or incorrectly) and it's only really important when it comes to subjects like football where there's more than one UK team. Scots might well disagree though.
As you probably realised, I changed the words and the actual song is-

Hup Holland Hup
Laat de leeuw niet in zijn hempie staan
Hup Holland Hup
Trek het beesie geen pantoffels aan
Hup Holland Hup
Laat je uit 't veld niet slaan
Want de leeuw op voetbalschoenen
Durft de hele wereld aan

I didn't previously know what it meant but checked it on Wiki to make sure it was family friendly before posting it.

Well, we now can start a whole discussion whether the actions on the field and in/around the stadium are always family friendly, but let's skip that

The song of the Dutch supporters is about the Dutch lion, which should be kept fierce.
The lion is in the armour of the Dutch royal family. And you often see an orange lion within the Dutch supporters block.
(and orange is our colour because of the royals 'van Oranje - Nassau' - 'of Orange - Nassau')

'Holland' is the common terminology for (historically) South + North Holland combined, so the western part of the Netherlands which played the major part during to Golden Ages.
But nowadays, our products normally say 'Made in Holland' (not: made in The Netherlands, but sometimes some e.g. Frysian company will probably state that). It's not a big issue here for most Dutch. As long as we're not identified as Germans or so...
(I've certainly no problems with Germans like most Dutch have also not, but we for sure want to be different)

While you're at it, hehe.. can you explain from the hymn: "ben ik van Duitschen bloed" (am I of GERMAN?? blood)

Or should that be Dietsen or something like that?

You for sure know that Germany is greater-Dietsland ;-)

But it is indeed (as far as I know) Duitsen blood in our hymn. As a reference to the origin of emperor Karl V I think.
The Netherlands is 'Diets' or 'Neder-Duits/Diets'.

But I'm sure some historian can correct me or phrase it better.
The time of the Frankians, Saksians, Fysians, Romans etc. is too long ago for me...

Well that's apt, because some of the English players are old fossils :(

Mixer, There was no mention of archaeology. They were talking about history.
Gus, Fossils have nothing to do with archaeology.

So there was no need for either of you to mention a word that should be banned from this forum.

Oops sorry, I will not say that word again.
A lot of noise in the street right now, I wonder what is happening?
Oh well, I will first have a look if there are any menhirs to visit in Brittany in France, where I go on holiday in August.

You guys won 2-1 ;)

What's the fuss about fossils? Fossils are not knockoffs ;)

Today Australia will beat the Dutch by 5-0. Any suspicion of giving a biased result is a coincidence.
(well, I only hope we get a better fate than Spain!).

And Greece will get at least one point. Sadly, the tradition is not with our side, that is, whenever
we win the first game, we win the entire tournament. Sadly, Colombia stopped us this time!

:P
