We've just confirmed that later this year my family and I will be heading over to New York. This is a HUGE thing for our family. We never go anywhere and always do the "sensible thing" regarding bills etc. I've got some long service leave and we decided to do it. My kids are still in shock :)

We'll be staying in New York with my brother-in-law and his family, and doing a roughly 5-6 days road trip down to Tennessee.

So...if you live in the US, or if you've been there, tell me the things we should be trying to see and do, either in New York, or between NY and Nashville. (We've got the biggies covered already, like the Empire state, statue of liberty, top of the rock, museum of natural history etc etc).

Also, if anyone lives in NY or Tennessee and would like to meet up, let me know.

We enjoyed the Blue Ridge Parkway.

You probably wouldn't be too far from the Creation Museum. Familiar with fellow Aussie, Ken Ham?

Too bad I live on the west coast of the country. I'd love to meet you and your fam. When you coming?

Shapeways would probably be happy to do a tour for you while you're in NY. I've taken the tour via Skype and it's pretty neat. It reminds me of the typical San Francisco technology startup with an industrial twist to it.

I know of him, that's about it.

Wow, that's something I definitely hadn't thought of! Great idea. :)

As I know there's an exhibition of Rubik's Cube held in New Jersey. And New Jersey is not far from New York. If your time is enough you may be interested in.

This is the website of the exhibition. It's called: Beyond Rubik's Cube. Details can be found on the website.

Oh, way cool! I thought that was only on short term. That's fantastic!

Awesome! This is exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for. I'll drag my kids along, but there's no way in a pink fit my wife will go near it.

Keep em' coming folks :)

I don't know if you're a baseball fan, but a game at Yankee Stadium would be fun!

If you are stopping through Washington DC, there is plenty to do there. The Smithsonian museums would probably take too much of your time though and you'd have to narrow it down.

Also before going on any road trip, my wife and I always consult this:
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/

If we didn't, we'd miss all the great things in this country like the Beer Can House, The giant Green Giant Statue, The Barbed Wire Museum, the Corn Palace, Luckenbach Texas, etc.

The last time I was in the US I took my family to Cedar Point in Sandusky. The roller-coasters are awesome!

Why is it that our American cousins can invent the world's most boring games i.e. American foot (almost never touches the) ball or base (miss-miss-miss-miss-miss-miss-miss-miss-miss-miss-miss-miss-miss-hit-win) ball? But then again we have cricket, which once lasted 10 days and ended as a draw, only because England had to catch the boat home

Thanks Seth, Darryl, Kelvin and Gus for your suggestions. :) I've added them to our list (which will eventually have to be honed down!)

Cedar Point looks like fun but it's actually quite far from the NYC / Tennessee driving corridor. It's in Ohio. If you're looking for amusement parks for the kids there are plenty not too far from NYC and /or on the way to Tennessee: Great Adventure, Busch Gardens, Hershey Park and others.

And please no USA bashing on this thread. It's about rline's trip which will be awesome.

Oh, one other thing you *must* do is go see a black gospel choir in Harlem, I went with my wife and it was fantastic - "Oh happy days, let the light shine on!" :P

Awesome suggestion! These are the sorts of things they don't tell you about in the glossy brochures. I know my whole family would love to see that.

I know what you should see Hermann the German and the Glockenspiel in New Ulm Minnesota because that's where I live. I know I love to meet with you badly to talk about puzzles. Okay I have a little confession to make. I wold love for you to come an sticker 10 or 12 puzzles for me because I can't do it to save my life and I'm also very picky(yours look perfect and your daughter does them WOW!!!!!!!!!). Plus you would make more money on vacation from me, see my collection and talk puzzles. Yes I know I'm way out of the way. I'm sorry I so feel ashamed  .

Not too far from Tennessee is a nice little town called Asheville in North Carolina, The town itself is amazing, but what makes it even better is it's home the Biltmore Estate notable for being the largest home in the United States.

now that's cool. I'll go for moral support but my wife will feel it's only fair since I will have dragged her along to the rubik's exhibit...

Yeah it'd be great to meet up but being about 20 hrs drive (and not on the way yo TN) I can't see it happening. I might try to set a day and time to meet up in NY with anyone interested.

Don't worry, I can't stand mushrooms at all. It's just a really cool pizza place. It's got kind of a 1960's hippie decor and feel to it.

I believe the one in Asheville is the original one and the coolest looking one.

It might be slightly west of your path, but you should go check out this puzzle collection at Indiana University:

http://www.indiana.edu/~liblilly/collec ... zles.shtml

"over 30,000 puzzles and 4,000 puzzle related books"

My brother works at the university there - he said they will actually let you "check out" the puzzles and play with them! Lot of twisty puzzles there...

edit: Here's the twistypuzzle category: (5.4) = 787 puzzles
http://webapp1.dlib.indiana.edu/images/ ... IjUuNCI%3D

If your course takes you anywhere near pittsburgh, stay a day and visit one of the top 5 natural history museums in the country.

Too bad you're not going to be towards my end of NY state. I'd like to meet other twisty fans but nobody lives here. :(

Well, this thread got edited quietly...
