I have to wonder how nice this metallic coating will look in a year or so. Unless I'm mistaken the tiles look like standard vacuform chrome, which is easily dissolved by the oils on human hands. Perhaps Mefferts is using a different process here. If not, I guess these things are display pieces only.

I was thinking/hoping that the tiles might be anodized aluminum which should hold their color and not oxidize too badly with use. I wonder if they are made of real metal or just a metal finish on plastic tiles. Unfortunately, the appearance of rounded edges in the photo seems to suggest the latter.

Just asked Jing Meffert and got this answer:
The material is ABS plastic with metal plated which is looking very nice and special.

WOW!!! Holy Cow!!! I said I ordered these on Friday and I just got them today!!! That was FAST!!

But yes, they seem to be metallic in color, not the pieces themselves. But look pretty nice :) eh, a tiled Pyraminx for $10 ain't bad ;)

You meant $20, right?

I haven't ordered mine yet because (a) I was never too fond of tiled puzzles and (b) I remember having plastic toys with metallic colouring when I was little, and the colour got rubbed off pretty soon. (OK, I did take them with me into a highly clorated pool, but I imagine some of the paint still comes off even in less extreme environment.) :?

oops yes, it's $20 8-)

well, it doesn't seem like it's painted on, but that the actual plastic is metalic in color.

i'd still prefer this to regular stickers - i always hate it when the stickers start to peel and it just doesn't feel the same. plus i don't solve it as i would, because i'd be too worried about them peeling off even more.
