New Ranking... maybe the ranks will go up to 9x9x9 because (not me) after 6x6x6 there is nothing more and quite a few people are 6x6x6... take a look for yourself...

Then reach that goal by posting with things that are interesting. It's a better feat to become a recognized contributor than a spambot.

For a moment I thought I was in the "post-as-many-messages-you-can-regardless-content-and-respect-to-others" or the "almost-always-monolectic-reply-that-can-increase-your-ranking-fast" boards...

Guys, this is a twisty puzzle forum, please please, PLEASE(!) keep it clean...
It is not nice to see a huge waves of replies without point.

Pantazis

PS Even my very own reply looks more like spam than an actual message...

Pentazi's right :)

Sorry had to do it. :P

Anyway, despite being one of the top posters, I don't feel that I am one of the biggest contributers to the site, I don't make custom mods, I try to offer advice, although my knowledge is limited and I still get a few things wrong....post count means nothing :)

I don't think it's about activeness. You can be very active (read every single topic and make valuable posts) without having a high ranking. On the other hand, you can post a lot (junk) even if you log in once a week, but that doesn't make you active.

I agree with everything Pantazis said (the last sentence is a possible exception :)).

Pembo... you are indeed a speedsolver and have seen you help many others who were asking various questions. Your type of activeness is actually the nice type! ;)

I mean, *everyone* posts interesting things, but sometimes people overdo it and without realising it can be way off topic...

I don't want to sound mean, I like everyone here, and I hope others like me too. But I will put it this way. If someone makes an off topic post and then it is read 180 times, and each time for 20 seconds, then a combined one hour (of possible productivity) is lost.

I strongly believe we can be much more efficient than that. ;)

I think that it only going up to 6x6 is fine. As it is there are only 9 people on these forums that have reached it.

granted, a number of people are knocking at 6x6's door, but i still think it's a nice accomplishment. if there were endless ranks or ranking all the way up to 9x9, i think it might incline people to make useless posts just for the sake of reaching that rank.

Judging by the jumps, from 5x5 - 6x6, it is 500 posts, so to a next rank, we are talking 750 at least, then about another 1000 to 8x8 and then 1500 to 9x9?

4250 posts for 9x9!?

These are just theoretical numbers.

Maybe new ranks can be introduced as the puzzles actually start seeing the market.

Or maybe we can forget any more and just celebrate the day when almost everyone will be 6x6x6's.

Why not not bother with a ranking system?

Quality not quantity, how many times is that going to be said?

Another forum I used to visit ranked people by how long they were on the forum and not by their post count. Their post count was just a number. In many ways it made more sense because people could tell at a glance the real "age" of the poster.

But then I realized that there already is a system set up for both posting and seniority, and that's by simply glancing at the join date and post count. I know it's easier to go by a symbolic representation by glancing at a picture, but I don't think it's really needed.

And there's no real way to mechanically quantify post quality, so that's ruled out.

I've always had this idea that when replying to a thread, you could rate the quality of the post above you. This would then give you an average of how 'useful' your posts were, so post count wouldn't matter.

I know it would be hard to do, and may be abused, but it would be a 'good' idea in the 'ideal' forum.

I was thinking something similar, many sites allowing comments allow viewers to rate them even if they don't post a reply.

Dave

P.S. I rate Pembo's above post "5 stars, very useful" ;)
